It was Carter Vs. Ford, so where were you during the course of that election and when Carter claimed his victory(unfortunately). It was a pretty close race.
I cast my first vote for President in 1976 at the age of 18.. I voted for Gerald Ford and I was SO VERY disappointed when Carter won instead.
My conservative views have only become more well understood and firmly held since then.
I got into my 1973 Dodge Dart equiped with a Lafayette 8-track player, with my sholder-length hair (parted in the middle of course), my Allman Bros. tee shirt, my Lee bell-bottoms and Frye boots, I walked into a mechanical voting booth and pulled the lever for.............Carter/Mondale??? Man, have things changed!I still have the old Lafayette. It still plays!

In 1976 I was living in Chicago, working and saving money to go back to college, and getting ready to vote [Republican] in my second presidential election.
I was a flaming leftist/activist in Chicago. Carter wasn't socialist enough for me. LOL!
I was in my 2nd year of college and voted for Carter (ducking). Don't worry, I didn't make that mistake again in 1980 and haven't voted Dim for President since. Sure ain't gonna this time out.
Recruit Training Center, San Diego, Ca., learning how to tie my shoes, march in a straight line, etc.
Can't say I followed the campaign very closely.
I was 4 yrs old. I remember freaking out when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, asking my dad why Carter was'nt doing anything about it. My first foreign policy discussion!
This was my second election to vote in, and I also voted for Ford. Ford lost because of his decision to pardon Nixon. Maybe he should've waited till after the election, as I think he would've won easily enough.
I was 29 and had just moved back to New Orleans from California to get away from a bad relationship.Traveled across country with my younger brother camping out and eating his vegetarian diet.I remember an older gentleman at the KOA campground in Ely,Nevada saying to another man,"I'd never vote for Carter,He'll give the colored everything"!
I remember voting Libertarian that year as I was very UNimpressed with both Ford and Jimmy Boy!
That's SO TRUE! I don't know if the word was in heavy use back then but the only word that comes to mind to decribe what I thought about him was/is WIMP! As a child, I was ashamed that he was our President. I felt bad about our country.
Living in Arizona, getting ready to spend the next 4 years in Germany (army brat). I was in middle school..
I was in the National Press Club bar where all the reporters were positively gleeful that they finally had the right man in the White House. I was also there about 3 years later when Carter announced he was cutting off kerosene supplies to Iran as punishment for taking our diplomats hostage. Even the most liberal reporters were snickering and guffawing amidsts cries of "yeah, Jimmy, that'll show em."
Oh yeah, I was also in Sheraton Washington the night he conceded defeat to Reagan. I was attending a victory party in the penthouse with family and friends and I wandered downstairs not having any idea it was where he would concede. I stood there like a Carter supporter only 15 feet from him as he conceded. It was easily one of the happiest nights of my life. We not only had Reagan, but we took the senate, and got rid of the worst president in history.
High school freshman--and I had weightier things on my mind besides silly old politics.
I was in Cambodia on a secret mission that is seared, seared into my memory.
Sadly, in '76 I was still in the death grip of the dark side. I know now how many lies I had bought into, courtesy of the leftist media and people like Kerry. I voted for McGovern, and then went apolitical until 1992 in the mistaken notion that non-registration would shield me from annoyances like jury duty. I voted twice for Perot, mostly as a protest, since Pennsylvania wasn't in play either time. If it had been close, I would have voted for Clinton in 1992, because I was angry about Iran-Contra (more lies). By 1996, I had begun my awakening via talk radio (thanks Rush!!) and Usenet. I could never have voted for Clinton in '96. In 1998, I found FR (thanks Jim!!). I'm ashamed of where I have been, but it's never too late to open your eyes!
In November 1976 I was stationed at Fort Eustis.
