CONCORD (AP) - A new Concord Monitor poll gives John Kerry a slight lead over President Bush in New Hampshire, thanks in part to Kerrys stronger showing among women and independents.
The Democratic candidate for president was the choice of 49 percent, compared to 45 percent for Bush. Ralph Nader got 2 percent and 4 percent were undecided.
The telephone poll of 600 likely voters was conducted Tuesday through Thursday by Research 2000. The margin of error was plus or minus 4 percentage points.
A similar Monitor poll three weeks ago had Bush and Kerry tied at 46 percent each, with 2 percent for Nader and 6 percent undecided. That poll was completed before the candidates held a series of three nationally televised debates.
In the latest poll, voters appeared equally divided over who could best resolve the war in Iraq, with 47 percent naming Kerry and 44 percent choosing Bush.
In a separate question, 48 percent said they disapproved of Bushs handling of Iraq, while only 39 percent approved of his actions. Thirteen percent were unsure.
However, asked who could better protect the United States from another terrorist attack, 51 percent chose Bush, compared to 41 percent for Kerry.
Pollster Del Ali said Kerrys chances of winning the state depend largely on Bushs success in linking Iraq and terrorism in the minds of voters.
If terrorism and Iraq are combined, Bush wins, Ali said. What Bush masterfully did in August was combine the two.
While registered Republicans outnumber Democrats in the state, independent undeclared voters are the largest sector of the New Hampshire electorate. The latest poll gave Kerry a slight lead of 52 percent to 40 percent for Bush among this group.
Kerry also benefited from more crossover votes. He was the pick of 15 percent of the registered Republicans polled, while Bush was the pick of 7 percent of Democrats. The margin of error for analyzing preferences based on party affiliation was 8 percentage points.
In the weeks after the Republican National Convention, Bush took the lead in many national polls by maintaining his lead among men and running about even with Kerry among women, who typically favor Democrats.
Ali said Kerry is picking up support again among New Hampshire women, besting Bush by 53 percent to 41 percent in the latest state poll. The margin of error for that group was plus or minus 6 percentage points.
Gawd...I think I'm gonna puke!
Southern New Hampshire's full of em.
Here are the FINAL polls of New Hampshire in the 2000 election.
ARG had Bush up 10 in NH, Univ. of NH had the race tied, Research 2000 had Gore up 4, and Zogby had Gore up 3.
My reaction exactly. What are these people thinking?
I have long advocated stopping the mASSholes at the border - they come up here to escape the high taxes of their crappy state and then screw things up demanding all kinds of 'free' services from the government.
Granny 'D' was just an amusing joke - living proof of the dangers of senility and people can age without ever becoming an adult before the invasion from the south.
That's the problem, They're not!
I can't understand people who flee a place because of big government/taxes then want to make the place to which they moved just like it.
Not thinking is correct. They're hallucinating. They somehow believe Kerry is to the right of Mao.
Beware Research 2000 polls.
