Schwarzenegger says Kerry, Bush evasive in debate

SAN FRANCISCO - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, in candor rare in a heated political season, said Thursday he was disappointed that both President Bush and Sen. John Kerry had evaded questions in their final campaign debate. "Both of them did not answer some of the questions, which I think is upsetting to me," Schwarzenegger told KGO radio in San Francisco. "I think it is much better to be straightforward with the people."

"I mean if you get a question about Iran and about the nuclear power and what you are going to do in the future with this nuclear power, and you don't even answer that question, I think it's a mistake, You know like Kerry did," he continued. "Bush did the same thing in some instances, not really get into it and answer it."

Schwarzenegger, a Republican, backs Bush but has shied away from campaigning for him in recent weeks. Instead he is urging people to vote against two California initiatives that would expand gambling.

Partisan politicians seldom give candid assessments of the debates as they hope to boost the public perception about their favored candidate. Yet Schwarzenegger is mindful that he serves a state with a Democratic majority very likely to back Kerry on Nov. 2.

"I think both of the candidates did extremely well yesterday," said Schwarzenegger, who has only been in office less than a year. "Because it was the third debate, they were much more with it, both of them."

Bush was not so good in the first debate, Schwarzenegger told KGO, but "now the whole thing is really swinging in his favor again."

Asked in a later radio interview why he was not campaigning with Bush, Schwarzenegger said he was asked to do so by the White House but was focusing on the problems of California.

"I don't want to travel around the country really," he told KABC in Los Angeles. "That's not what they people want me to do. They want me to stay here and do my job."

Two propositions...out of sixteen. You'd think that'd leave a little time to campaign for Bush.

Pretty disappointing when a Republican governor won't go to bat for a Republican President.

I am disappointed that Arnold isn't out campaigning for Bush, at least in these last few critical weeks, especially since it's such a close race.

He campaigned for Bush's Father, and W could use his help too.

Schwarzenegger Says Kerry, Bush Evasive in Debate

Thu Oct 14, 7:45 PM ET Entertainment - Reuters Celebrity/Gossip

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites), in candor rare in a heated political season, said on Thursday he was disappointed that both President Bush (news - web sites) and Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) had evaded questions in their final campaign debate.

I just re-watched his convention speech on CNN In-Demand. I was inspired by it. Now I read this crap.

We are in a war and Bush can't be 100% open with the public. He also can't make comments against nations he wants to work with in the next year.

Kerry, had no such reasons and ran away from every funding question he had for plans of his.

The hope we all had for change in this state's direction , especially when it came to tossing demRats out of office, are very likely going to not happen.

That's because there aren't many seats in play this year, and quite frankly, unless the Gub goes on the road to the very few contested districts, he sure has raised a lot of money for what appears to be not many targets , either initiative or candidate-wise.

Keeping the indians under control and paying more into the public trough seems to be his main object at this point... just my observation.

Go to Kerry Spot and find the past couple of days's comments on this.

This article misquoted Arnold. Or should I say, selectively edited him.

Arnold wins one election and suddenly thinks he knows more about running a campaign than George W Bush.

Hey, Arnie, thanks for all your help. If you call for help from WH, don't be surprised if no one answers.

As another poster said, this piece completely distorts Arnold's comments. Consider the source. In the next 3 weeks you will see more lies, distortions, coverups and phony stories from the MSM than you ever imagined possible. My DNC sources tell me they have something BIG planned for Bush if all else fails. They are throwing everything at us, and have the MSM along for the full ride. Saddle up, ignore the polls, and FIGHT TO THE DEATH.

Because we must effect a cultural change in the Middle East or be killed, maybe not. Yet, if we can make continued successes and get the Middle East to clean up it's act, could maybe only take15-20 years.

I guess the debates were of "special interest" to him.

If you or elizabetty would be so kind as to specifically post what is inaccurate, that would be greatly appreciated... or slap a link up..

I had not seen anything re: comments by the gub about the debate until tonight.

I have been pre-occupied with other things here...

Thanks.
