Fleeing SUV Suspected of Carrying Illegal Immigrants Causes 11-Car Crash, Killing Six in Ariz.
The Associated Press
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) - A stolen sport utility vehicle that had been chased by deputies rolled over at a busy intersection near a Army post Saturday, causing an 11-car crash that killed six people and injured 15, sheriff's officials said. Deputies believed the SUV was carrying illegal immigrants in Cochise County, in southeastern Arizona. They first saw the vehicle driving out of a brushy area along a highway and trailed it for a short time, sheriff's spokeswoman Carol Capas said.
Deputies called for backup and stopped chasing the vehicle after the suspect sped and drove away recklessly, Capas said.
Authorities then spotted the SUV heading north on State Route 90. Sierra Vista police officers used tire deflation devices to slow the vehicle, said Frank Valenzuela, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety.
At a busy intersection near the east entrance to Fort Huachuca, the driver lost control and the SUV rolled several times, causing a wreck that involved 11 cars, Valenzuela said.
The crash occurred shortly before noon. Traffic in the area was diverted to Tombstone while authorities investigated.
The vehicle had been reported stolen in Phoenix, Capas said.
Thanks for the ping. This is a horrible tragedy.
From what I have read, it looks like law enforcement will get the blame. The blame should also be placed on politicians who encourage people to come to this country for $5.00 an hour jobs.
This is truly sad.
I wish they would do that! Lots of laws broken, but of course the illegals usually get a free pass. American taxpayers should also file a class action suit against the Mexican government for the billions of dollars the illegal aliens cost us each year. I wonder how Bush's buddy Vicente would like that?
The details in this early story are incomplete. Latest word is that 5 died at the scene and two more at the ER at Sierra Vista Community Health Center.
The injured are estimated at 30, with 16 critical. It took 11 helicopters to evac the critical cases to the trauma centers in Tucson and Phoenix. Most of the injured are Americans, their lives now unalterably changed. Judging from incomplete decriptions from the scene, most were military, their dependents, or military retirees -- payday weekend heading for the commissary on Fort Huachuca.
But, but, they're realy just hard working people that come here to find work. /dripping with sarcasm
I drive through that intersection every day on the way to work. We had van loads of youth coming back from a church trip to Mesa who could have been hit if they had been in the intersection when the border intruders wrecked.
I ended up staying an extra night in Mesa because I heard it was a pain to get to town right now. I'll just drive early in the morning to get to church on time.
This stuff has got to stop. Seal the borders now!
The first thing my wife said when she heard about this accident was, they better damned well use the American helicopters to fly the Americans first. There better not be Americans lying their dying on the highway while illegals are being flown to the hospital ahead of them. I reminded her that it wouldn't be the first time and that we know of at least one American who died on a gurney in the ER while border intruders crowded the place for free medical care.
More needless death and injury of U.S. citizens.
It's easy to see how this one incident could end up costing
millions of dollars.
Eleven helicopters were launched to transport the injured to hospitals all over the state.
Stolen vehicles, death and distruction on the highways, and sky high insurance rates are small prices to pay in order to keep the price of meat at $2/lb. or less.
It's not the responsibility of the Mexican government to protect our borders, it's our government's responsibility. They should be suing our government.
I want them to sue both -- not that they have a hope in hell of ever collecting from either.
Here's Tancredo with a letter on how we can all help.
Tancredo is well acquainted with Spiff, me, and a lot of other residents down here. He visits quite frequently and does a lot better job of representing us than our own congress critter.
Also, I listed stolen vehicles, death and distruction on the highways, and sky high insurance rates as small prices to pay for our open border policy. We shoul also add rape.
Welcome to Reality -- I was born in Colorado Springs. A lake and a department store still bear my real name there.
I think this immigration issue is about ready to explode. People all over the country are fed up and race baiting no longer shuts down the debate.
Rush won't say squat about this. It has illegals in the story.
"Lawless SUVs are bringing this country to it's knees."
I think you've got the lyrics to a song going there....maybe Dylan or Bob Marley-like.
