Miners can start at $40,000 to $50,000 but can make as much as $100,000 if they work all available overtime.

Now, a married couple of hard-working coal miners can qualify for the title of "the wealthiest Americans" according to John Kerry.

That is why we don't need to vote for Kerry. The American people need to be earning bigger wages without taxation penalties.

Where was this demand 20 years ago when I had a good back?

Between the company store and the unions, the miners always came out holding an empty bag.

I know, this is a very good job opportunity. Our friend told my husband the same thing. Our group of friends is getting up there in age.

Hopefully the American people jump on this job opportunity before anyone else does.

We have no illegal immigrants to fill these jobs?

Never was in a coal mine. But I've played around quite a bit in a hardrock mine.

Absolute back breaking work. You need to be in prime physical condition.(which I ain't anymore.)

You could get killed quicker than the time it would take you to realize you were dead.

You'll eat like a horse and sleep like a baby. Probably in the bathtub.

But sleepin in the bathtub is a good idea. Take at least a week after you come out to get the grunge out from under your fingernails.

Strange development, especially since it means deep mines. Given the mechanization of deep soft-coal mining (http://www.umwa.org/mining/lwmine.shtml ), I’ll bet that eventually immigrants from Mexico take these jobs as step up the ladder in America, just as many Slavic immigrants did about 100 years ago.

It is so sad if the American men don't jump on this jobs, then complain about immigrants filling these jobs. I tell you one thing, if I was a man who needed to support my family I would jump on this job immediately.

I am a degreed professional and have been out of my line of work, earning 50% of what my profession pays, for four years. If I weren't almost 40, I would be on a plane to the mines right now.

I voted for Bush and just have again (absentee), but this economy is still not where it should be. Why else would I contemplate taking a labor job over one at a desk?

My copy of the Constitution doesn't seem to address this "need". Perhaps I don't have a "modern" edition.

That would be a tough decision. It's sad how degreed professionals aren't earning what they should be.

My grandfather worked in the mines, hard job back breaking labor, black lung, working in a damp, dark hole.

These folks earn their pay checks.
