John O'Neill's statement regarding Nightline
http://swift4.he.net/~swift4/article.php?story=20041015080256834 ^ | 10/15/04 | John O'Neill

Statement by John O'Neill on "Nightline" Appearance Author: Dated: Friday, October 15 2004 @ 08:00 AM PDT Viewed: 1485 times While I have a tremendous amount of respect for Ted Koppel and ABC News I was appalled to learn that ABC News would go to the lengths of traveling to Vietnam to interview three Viet Cong communists in yet a third attempt by ABC to corroborate John Kerry’s version of the events that took place on February 28th, 1969. I would only ask the American people: "Who do you trust more, three members of a communist regime that tortured and killed our American troops or a group of more than 280 highly decorated American veterans, who proudly served their country and are now responsible members of their respective communities?"

The number of veterans who support John Kerry’s accounts of his military service would not fill one Swift Boat. But instead of sitting down to interview some of the 280 plus members of our Swift Boat organization, ABC News chose to travel to Vietnam taking extraordinary and highly suspect steps to find someone to corroborate John Kerry's story.

ABC News Nightline has now dedicated three separate programs to this one incident while ignoring John Kerry's now discredited Senate testimony that he spent Christmas in Cambodia, his receiving a purple heart after all three of the officers required to approve such an issuance rejected his application, or his constantly changing account of the circumstances surrounding his remaining medal, a bronze star.

Further, one has to wonder why ABC News will not address the serious questions as to why John Kerry only received an honorable discharge through the act of then President Carter, seven years after his discharge, and had to have all of his military citations reissued, on the same day, when he became a United States Senator in 1985. And, finally, why has Nightline found it of no interest to permit any POWs to come on their program to explain why they believe John Kerry betrayed their nation, caused them to be incarcerated for an additional two years and caused them tremendous additional hardship and suffering.

"Lines are clearly drawn, boys and girls."

Look back into history. Groups get the most ruthless and deadly just before they are dispensed with. Get armed and if you see an attack coming, just say "not today".

Definitely deserves a bump tonight!

I was appalled by Ted Koppel.

O'Neill did a great job of countering this media prostitute.

Thanks for the ping, Tonk.

Part of me wishes I'd seen Nightline last night, and the other part is glad I didn't. I'd have most likely thrown something large and heavy through the TV screen. LOL!

D*mn that Koppel and his crap! Hoorah for John O'Neill for shoving his face in it!!

What law specifically did Ollie break??
----
Congress had specifically made its intent known about whether the country should continue aid. Whether or not one agrees with that (I certainly did not), Ollie was involved in the scheme to get around Congressional intent. Perhaps "breaking the law" is not the accurate terminology, but I think you know what I mean. Regardless of whether I disagree with Congress or not, I know myself well enough to know that had a democrat done the same thing conservatives would have been all over it.

Well ... if a law means something ... it means what it said.

The "Boland Amendment" stipulated that no "appropriated funds" could be used to support the Contras.

While various legal beagles on Reagan's staff indicated that the Boland Amendment was probably un-constitutional - the Reagan administration tried to find LEGAL ways to get money to the Contras. They encouraged other countries to donate to the Contras (and the Democrats claimed that any administration official - paid by appropriated funds - in soliciting donations - would be in violation of the Boland Amendment.)

Ollie and the NSA came up with a plan to sell at inflated prices spare parts to Iran (remember that Iran and Iraq were waging a long 8+ year battle that we didn't want to see either side totally win and defeat the other side.) So to keep Iraq from defeating Iran when Iran was loosing, we sold parts ... paid the "book cost" of parts back to the U.S. Treasury, and the remaining money went to the Contras.

Maybe it was a scam ... but Ollie didn't send appropriated monies to the Contras. Since the administration reimbursed the Federal Government for the cost of spare parts that were sold ... the U.S. government wasn't cheated.

Ollie's crime - the one he wasn't charged with - was aiding and abetting opponents of a Communist regime, and actions that lead to the overthrow of a Communist regime. This crime is a serious one (to Democrats).

Ollie was charged with lying to Congress ... but his conviction was overturned because what he told Congress when he was under oath was proven to be true, and other items that the Democrats wanted to charge him with were covered under the grant of immunity that the Democrats granted him.

Bottom line - Ollie led an effort to find a LEGAL LOOPHOLE to aid Contras. It is not illegal to find legal loopholes, in the same way that people can use loopholes to lower their taxes. Doing so doesn't make someone a tax cheat.

The Democrats wanted to strangle the Contras and keep Danny Ortega and his Communists in power in Nicarauga ... just because the "intent" of the legislation was to prevent aid to the Contras ... But it is not illegal to violate THE INTENT of a Law; it is illegal to violate the Letter of the Law. The Reagan administration is guilty of pissing of the Democrats, who tried to aid the Communists.

As such ... Ollie is to be admired, not condemned!!

And remember - guilty people who commit heinous crimes get turned loose on technicalities .... why should we not offer the same "letter of law vs. intent of law" release on a technicality to someone whose only "crime" was to help spread liberty and freedom in a Central American country?

Mike?

Thanks for that lecture. All of this does not change at all my original point. A huge segment of the country doesn't pay any attention to Ollie North so putting him out as a spokesman is preaching to the choir. It won't convert a soul.

"A huge segment of the country doesn't pay any attention to Ollie North"

Proof?

Ollie North is well liked AND respected here.

Unlike Hanoi Kerry

PS I served in Viet Nam with both of them.

One was a hero, and Hanoi Kerry was the traitor.

My husband, a Viet vet, said that if the unspeakable happened and Kerry gets elected, we ought to keep contributing and have the Swift Boat Vets keep running their ads even after he takes office. Run the "Stolen Honor" movie every week. Send it overseas and show it like Farenheit 9/11.

Whoah == your husbands thinking way outside the box!! high fivin' him on that. but oh God please don't let that happen, please please please

Yes, that article should be passed around to thousands, and thanks for sharing. It's almost like O'Neill has been placed on this earth to fight this dragon for his whole life. I mean when you look at it...he's been fighting Kerry publicly since 1971 when he (O'Neill) was only 25, I believe at the time he and Kerry had that now famous heated nationally televised debate on the Dick Cavett Show. And here it is, 33 years later, and O'Neill is still fighting for the truth. Still fighting against the very same slippery deceiver so the American public will be protected from, God forbid -- electing him as President.

hey,Tonkin!
Great to hear from you again tonight. How ya doin? Actually, that Vietnam Vet comment was a quote that I was making back in response to Txsleuth. She said HER husband was the Vietnam Vet who said if Kerry got elected we ought to keep running the Swiftee ads. I ran her quote at the top of my response to her, and responded back by saying that her husband was thinking outside the box, and God forbid if Kerry does get elected. So Txsleuth's husband is the one who is actually your brother vet, Tonkin, and it's so neat that you guys welcome each other home. I didn't know you did that. But that's who to address it to. Tsxleuth.

Is this the same "Vo Van Tam" from the ABC report???

VIETNAM Chief prosecutor, top police held in corruption scandal

(snip)"Colonel Duong Minh Ngoc, director of the Criminal Police Department, was also arrested on Wednesday night. He is accused of dropping at least six criminal cases against Cam and his cohorts. Also arrested were Le Minh Hung, a district police chief, Vo Van Tam, head of the anti-prostitution and gambling squad, and another officer in the same department.

Did the Viet Cong witnesses receive any compensation? I really have problems believing them to be credible.

That may depend on the meaning of the word "compensation". I heard a "keeper" accompanied the "witnesses throughout their time with abc.
