I'm thinking back to the 2000 debates. Wasn't there a question about education when then-governor Bush mentioned that the twins had gone to public school and the Gore kids had been sent to private school?
If I remember correctly, Gore's response was a curt one-line like "I'll thank you for leaving my children out of this..."
Did I imagine this?
I've googled with no luck, been to the debates.org website and searched the transcripts--no luck there either.
Does anyone else have any recollection of this who may know where to search for the quote?
Trying to establish that the Dems have asked previously to keep the candidates' kids out of the debates.

Why does working on a campaign make anyone's sexual preference fair game for national discussion. Maybe the candidate, but a worker? Mary Cheney isn't running for office.

Sure she is. By taking part in a campaign you're no longer a neutral and can and should expect such behavior from your opponent's campaign. Its not ethical but campaigns are dirty if u haven't noticed.

If Kerry had an obsessive gambler on his staff would bringing that up in ANY context be apprproiate? If not, why? How about if Kerry's daughter, who is a part of his campaign, had a problem with drugs? You think it wouldn't be mentioned?

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear for those who are a bit slower. IMHO Cheney's daughter is fair game because she's a part of his campign staff. She's not a neutral and should not expect such treatment. U take part in the campaign expect some potshots. Is it decent to bring that sort of thing up? No. But elections are, as the rats have amply demonstrated, not for the squeamish.

It is tasteless and tacky. It shows a complete lack of class. That is because it is something that "classy people" don't point out. I am a cripple (due to my service in Vietnam) would it be polite for someone to refer to me as a cripple in a debate?
Talking about someone's sexuality --well it may be true what they have to say--but there are things that people just don't say because it is tacky.

Kerry has many faggot friends including probably half the congressional delegation from massachusettes...i.e., Barney Franks, etc. He did NOT have to search desperately for an unfortunate example to use in his remark. It was a "cheap" shot.
You're blurring a very problematic line here - She is part of the staff, but she is NOT part of the "Public" staff. She does not do any sort of on-stage work, but simply works in the background. Because she happens to be related to Cheney does NOT change her status to being a public figure.
Look at it this way - The Bush twins have participated in campaign events. Their behavior during those events is surely fair game. What they do outside those events, provided it is legal, should NOT be fair game.
Mary Cheney has not even participated in any single campaign events.
