"Everyone knows America's vaccine industry is in serious trouble, with an ever dwindling number of producers and recent severe vaccine shortages. What everyone also should know is that the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine has now pinned much of the blame on the government vaccine-buying program promoted by former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The panel of doctors and economists issuing a report on vaccines last week identified as a fundamental cause of the problem the fact that the government purchases 55 percent of the childhood vaccine market at forced discount prices. The result has been "declining financial incentives to develop and produce vaccines."
The root of this government role goes back to August 1993, when Congress passed Clinton's Vaccines for Children program. The plan, promoted by the Children's Defense Fund, was to use federal power to ensure universal immunization. So the government agreed to purchase a third of the national vaccine supply (the President and Mrs. Clinton had pushed for 100 percent) at a forced discount of half price, then distribute it to doctors to deliver to the poor and the un- and under-insured."

I wish GWB would explain this better when sKerry brings up that "not letting the government negotiate prices" canard, because it is pretty clear that the above situation is what Bush is trying to avoid repeating. So much is made about tiny Canada dictating drug prices in their tiny market. The US foots the bill for research while Canada gets its drugs for variable cost. But when you try the same thing in a mega-market like the United States, impact is enormous. This needs to be made clear.
Also, why aren't we hearing more about the RAT lawyers killing off the domestic vaccine industry and the RATs opposing any kind of protection for vaccine makers?

There is no Canadian law that says they have to sell you the same medicines that Canadians get. You would get drugs imported into canada but not legal to sell to Canadians... It would be perfectly legal to sell them to you.
Of course if the you got you vaccine from Canada they would not have to tell you it was contaminated.... But what does it matter if you died from a contaminated vaccine... the important thing is it was cheap.

Couldn't locate it but wasn't Edelman briefly married to one Jimmy Carter's political appointees by the name of Joe Browder? Edelman also studied in Russia according to her bio. That would definitely make Ms. Edelman a demoncRAT and liberal leftist socialist.

this is what Bush alluded to in his comments during the 3rd debate. He respectfully did not name names, which was admirable.
The fact that CBS worded a debate question as a statement attempting to pin the vaccine shortage on the President is not admirable, however.

This is pure bull s..t I see you've been brainwashed by the nanny state out there into thinking that the FDA is your good friend and divine protector. The fact is that there are only a handful of pharmacuetical companies in the world that Canada, Europe and the USA deal with.
It's also a fact that the FDA has approved medicines that are sometimes very harmful to people, just check out the huge flap going on right now about anti-depressent drugs being approved for children, (they now believe these drugs are causing children to commit suicide and the CDC has issued a stern warning). Then there's VIOX, an FDA approved drug that has caused untold number of heart attacks in Americans. Of course there was Viagra, another drug that killed at least two dozen Americans before the FDA realized that you can't take it along with certain heart medications.
In any case, if you're claiming that Canada would import drugs from, say, Nigeria, to be sold only to Americans, I've got a bridge in New York I'm just love to sell to you.
Bad vaccines will be the solution when demand overruns supply. Count on it.
I had called a local Grocery Store a few days ago asking if they were going to have the shots this year.... They told me to call back on the 14th today to see if they would have them for the 15th..... I did call back and they told me they would be giving the shots between 8 am and 2 pm.... And explained about payments, etc... Ending with an encouragement to bring a chair and snacks. I asked why and she said 'we are expecting thousands'. I then asked how many doses they had. She replied 1,000. I don't think I'll venture close by that area until afternoon....
