Married Up Kerrys Blundering Reagan Rip-off
As we all know, President Reagan passed away this summer. In the multitude of heartfelt remembrances and eulogies, Brian Mulroney, former Primer Minister of Canada, related this story:
President Reagan had spoken to Parliament, handled complex files with skill and good humor -- strongly impressing his Canadian hosts -- and here we were, waiting for our wives. When their car drove in a moment later, out stepped Nancy and Mila -- looking like a million bucks. As they headed towards us, President Reagan beamed, threw his arm around my shoulder and said with a grin: "You know, Brian, for two Irishmen we sure married up."
In that visit -- in that moment -- one saw the quintessential Ronald Reagan -- the leader we respected, the neighbor we admired and the friend we loved -- a president of the United States of America whose truly remarkable life we celebrate in this magnificent cathedral today.
In yesterdays debate John Kerry rather shamelessly appropriated Reagans line about marrying up. Heres what Kerry said:
Well, I guess the president and you and I are three examples of lucky people who married up.And some would say maybe me moreso than others.
But I can take it.
Reagans joke was self deprecating and good natured and even played in to the American dream of the underdog being the winner. The class and beauty of their wives formed the basis of the gag. Class and beauty is what they married up to.
Kerry, on the other hand, transformed marrying up in to marrying wealth. His crass me moreso than others took the class and beauty out of it and made him come off as the smarmy gigolo he is.
He tried to rip-off Reagan but couldnt even do that right because Kerry just doesnt get it.
:-)
Kerry always reminds me of a Blue Meanie when he grins.
For one thing, I voted for Kerry. Didn't you get the memo?
The point was to show the polls for what they are - useless.
On the contrary, I bet he got PLENTY.
Tacky, tacky, tacky.
Two-time gigolo John Kerry is the kind of guy who utters inappropriate stuff in mixed company and is oblivious to the rolling eyeballs and shuffling of feet.
Call to IS Department - cleanup on keyboard on the 8th Floor....
Not surprised he stole from Reagan - Ter-ASShat has been stealing from Lincoln since the convention."
I agree with you. I'm afraid that most things about our beloved RR these days doesn't get said or felt out loud by Republicans. They suppress themselves, they don't want to be impolite and exploitive, but rR on PMSMBC well thats a differant matter altogether, plus now jk on top of that...I wonder how Nancy feels....
A former drunk is close enough
I thought that, too. I remember that President Bush used "marrying up" to praise Laura, too, but for a different reason of "marrying up."
When Kerry started talking about his mother, me being only a man, didn't pick-up on the anger felt by wives; I just thought he was awkwardly trying to be sentimental. My wife reacted with outrage and disbelief (I still didn't get it). Today, while I was doing my usual perusal of blogs and talk shows, I finally understood. I suspect even leftist women had the same reaction. Hopefully, this will have a ripple effect come Nov. 2.
So, for all men, thank John Kerry for making this blunder, and file it away for future reference.
During the Reagan funeral, when Mulroney said the above line, I half expected him to say this in addition:
When their car drove in a moment later, out stepped Nancy and Mila -- looking like a million bucks (or about a million and a half bucks Canadian)
Its actually a rip off from Bush, that "marrying up" is one of Bush's favorite lines, that he has used for years.
So Terraaaayza keeps Kerry grounded, by what telling him to "shove it", or actually keeping him grounded and not letting him fly on the private plane
What does it say about Dizzy Tizzy......about the same as we think it always said about Hildebeast.
There's no way to know whether he told the truth about his mother or not. That made it a safe story to tell, whereas if he told any story about Terraza, SHE would know if he were lying, and maybe a few others would know, too.
Yeah but it left the moderator giggling like a schoolgirl.
You nailed it exactly!
Not only did he NOT talk about Teresa Heinz Kerry, but he complimented Laura Bush! Then (on FOX at least) there was a one second shot of Teresa Heinz Kerry - slouching and frowning. This was clearly contrasted to the brilliant smile of Laura Bush.
My wife noticed this right away. IMHO, this was a far worse gaffe than the Mary Cheney gaffe.
I wonder whether Teresa's loans to the Kerry Campaign are demand notes.
