Senator Defends Shutting Hill Office - Security Briefings Alarmed Dayton (makes me mad I could spit)
Washington Post ^ | October 14, 2004 | Maureen Fan and Helen Dewar

In a worst-case scenario quietly presented last month by a joint CIA-FBI agency that analyzes intelligence, al Qaeda would use weapons of mass destruction to launch multiple simultaneous attacks on the United States and overwhelm the U.S. government.

It was an extreme possibility on a menu of unknowns that had less-threatening options. All 535 members of Congress continued to work as usual until this week, when Sen. Mark Dayton (D-Minn.) shut his offices, sent his staff home and cautioned people against visiting Capitol Hill.

The surprising response by the freshman senator from Minnesota to the latest in a series of warnings prompted ridicule and a flurry of angry reactions yesterday. Mayor Anthony A. Williams (D) said Dayton's decision was "ill-informed." Minnesota's senior senator, Norm Coleman (R), called Dayton reckless. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) compared him to the boy who cried wolf. Colleagues on both sides of the aisle whispered "paranoid."

The seat of the nation's government has been menaced by repeated threats and dangers -- shootings, anthrax, Code Orange alerts and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. There have been repeated security briefings from federal authorities about various and unspecific threats. But no member of Congress had fled, until Tuesday evening.

Dayton, who along with his colleagues began a preelection recess this week, was unrepentant yesterday. "I would not advise someone to visit Capitol Hill between now and the election, out of extreme precaution," Dayton said in an interview. "I would not bring my two sons to Capitol Hill between now and the election."

Dayton defended his decision, saying it would be immoral to expose his staff to risks that he himself would not be taking because of the recess.

"I still believe in my soul I made the necessary and wise decision to protect my staff and constituents who might visit my office," he said.

On page one he is spreading this fear. How do the soldiers feel as they read this in the Early Bird in Iraq and Afganistan.

No wonder they loath democrats. They never catch a break!

You know when I heard about this yesterday the first thing I worried about was why did they not say what party he is with. Every time I heard about this on the news yesterday no mention. When it was brought up I thought for sure if there were a republican Senator that we would hear about his party from the roof tops but not about a democrat.

Well, as I listened to this to public servant tell the viewers that folks should NOT visit DC unless they have to I was MAD. Then when asked about those who live there, like my mother, he said well I cannot speak for them, but, I know what I know and I do not want my staff to be in a place where they may fall victim to a terror attack. Interviewers asked well what makes you think this way. He said you could not discuss his briefings but he said, one of the planes was meant for DC and went into a PA field. Then he said al Qaeda always goes back and finishes his job (hmm I may be off but how many times have they done that). If he does not have to be in DC then he cannot ask his staff to do the same.

The behavior of this senator is unpatriotic. It is only for political gain. This senator only instilled fear in most. I look forward to hearing from anyone who knows of this senator or has him as their public servant. I am certain my observations will be supported.

I am so mad I could spit on his shoes!

Instead of Congressman fleeing Washington, they should move large parts of the cultural heritage, like the Smithsonian, the National Archives, etc. to the heartland. Spread out the government. There's no reason to have that stuff there to begin with.

I will convey all of your thoughts, and mine, when I call Minnesota's "Senior" Senator today.

For those who don't know, Dayton has repeatedly sought to buy political office in this state. He is the radical left scion of the Dayton/Hudon/Target fortune. His political CV includes a range of New Left suppport including involvement with the Black Panther's way back when. In addition, he is a flake.

When his term ends in '06, he'll be toast. This episode will be a nail in his political coffin.

WCF, thank you so much for your post. I think I might call as well. I just do not think they care about none residents. But, who cares I am mad and I am not going to take it anymore.

I was unaware of Dayton, I mean there are a hundred of them and well, it is tough enough keeping up with my own senators (not including our moving with the military).

I think I know more about him then I wanted. How did he last as long as he has? I bet he thought he would be applauded by his fellow senators. But, many disagree. They know a stupid person when they see one I suppose.

Actually maybe we can put all the stupid senators in the building and let all the terrorists know. Oh, bad, Chele, that is not very nice! Going to stand in the corner for my devilish thoughts!

Keep up the good work and thank you for the post.

OH do NOT get me started I am really so mad about this story I do not know where to begin.

Yep, we are so unsafe in DC. UBL is about to spread terror all over the US due to the elections. We are not safer, we have a senator who thinks nobody should be in DC unless you have to be ... what is that **it? I cannot understand how a senator can make this claim and get away with it.

This is bad behavior .. make a video senators behaving badly. It would ousell "gals acting badly" I would even invest in the flick. Show this guy and all the rest for what they are.

Have to wonder what the likes of Zell Miller are feeling as this occurs.

Thanks for your comment - it is this type of reaction that makes you think President Bush will get the benefit of the safety vote.

If a rich Senator is do afraid to go to work, what about nomral working folks who don't have a ski chalet to visit?

How can we expect any better from the side of the aisle that is against the WoT? Wants to abandon the Iraqis, wants to abandon DC in the hopes that crawling into a hole will make terrorism go away. I'll bet he'd use his wife and kids as shields to save his a$$ for last, too. I got news for you, dude. Even if you're the last American standing - or in your case, cowering - they're going to get you unless you get them first. Please try to grow a pair, you snivelling coward!
