IRS Asked To Probe Kerry Appearance At Church
POSTED: 6:55 pm EDT October 13, 2004 UPDATED: 7:01 pm EDT October 13, 2004
WASHINGTON -- The Internal Revenue Service is being asked to investigate whether a Miami church where Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry spoke on Sunday violated tax laws.
John Kerry courted the black vote Sunday in Florida, meeting with, among others, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.
Barry Lynn, of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said statements by the pastor and leading Democrats during the worship service amounted to explicit endorsements of Kerry.
The Rev. Gaston Smith referred to his guest as "President Kerry," the Rev. Jesse Jackson led the congregation in a chant about voting for Kerry, and the Rev. Al Sharpton said a Kerry victory would be "payback" for George Bush's victory in 2000.
Lynn said churches that do invite candidates should also invite their opponents and should refrain from endorsing either one.
Meanwhile, it's not just Democrats hoping to get a little help from churches this election year.
The Christian Coalition is distributing 30 million voter guides that include conservative catch-phrases in describing the two presidential candidates.
The guides' use of wording like "unrestricted abortion on demand" has caused critics to question their fairness. The brochures also refer to "affirmative action programs that provide preferential treatment."
Starting Thursday, the group will be distributing the guides in churches, shopping malls and other public places across the country.
Coalition officials defend the brochures as non-partisan and denied they contained "loaded" language.
But some political analysts and critics said the guides almost always support the Republican campaign.
The Christian Coalition has nonpartisan status, which allows it to retain a federal tax exemption.

During the dark ages of Clinton, Christian groups and churches were regularly attacked by the IRS, and many of the Christian Coalition's activities were severely restricted...
but Clinton and Gore took every opportunity to appear in black churches etc,
now this creep Barry is complaining about the one church visit from this year only, when he had dozens of violations to attack ....
he is unabashedly leftist and Demonrat and I think he wants to sound so impartial NOW of course, so the Christian Coalition's work can be stopped...

The Christian Coalition did not mention a candidate's name...this church called him President Kerry (puke). I think there is a huge difference there. One group is informing the people on the issues, the other is telling people who to vote for. I can not understand how any Christian who has ever read the Bible could vote for abortion or same sex marriage! The Bible is very clear and you either believe it is God's Word or you don't...no gray area there!

Barry Lynn, of Americans United for Separation of Church and StateI'm sure they have a file 13 that they file all of his "reports" in. He was on O'Reilly tonight and instead of talking about this he talked about the "evil" Republicans passing out VOTER GUIDES. This church had POLITICAL SIGNS with KERRY'S NAME on them IN CHURCH!

Could they EXPLOIT one more person for this Presidential election?! I suppose this was SUPPOSE to intimidate President Bush tonight. We all have family, friends and neighbors who are also ill but none of us think they should KILL the unborn to "heal" them. I guess "STARS" are more important than the rest of us.

Barry Lynn compared THIS church campaigning to church VOTER GUIDES with NO NAMES of who to vote for.

Wrong. Barry Lynn has been doing this for YEARS. The IRS probably laugh at him after they throw the "report" in the trash. That is IF he even filed anything. He is a LEFT WING KOOK pretending to care about Separation of Church and State which I don't think is any of his business in the first place. The IRS has NEVER done anything to any church because it is absolutely NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS. Ask him to provide ONE example of where the IRS has fined a church for anyone campaigning in them.
I still email him every time the DEMS do this because I know that it irritates him. He claims to be a Chruch of Christ pastor but from some of the emails that I have received from that office I kind of doubt it.

He may not have examples.
But evangelical Christian magazines have had several examples over the years of pressures from the IRS over far less partisan things than a presidential candidate speaking at a church within days of the election.
It's an issue that needs to be screamed bloody murder over.

Not ONE church has ever been fined by the IRS. NONE, ever. Barry Lynn is lying AGAIN. He is trying to scare churches who ONLY publish voter guides (with no candidate's name) while trying to pretend he is "reporting" both sides. Democrats get away with it every election. They use the black churches like a campaign stop. You will never see a politician in one any other time like when they are having a revival or need money for church repairs. But you will see them there like clock work during an election.
