Four South Korean sailors missing after ship capsized; South Korea searched for North Korean submarine

Four South Korean navy sailors were missing Wednesday after their ship capsized and sank during stormy weather off the southeastern coast, officials said.

The ship with a five-man crew went missing around midnight Tuesday while returning from a nighttime training mission, Defense Ministry spokesman Nam Dae-yon said. A sailor was rescued by other navy vessels searching the area.

Nam said the ship developed engine trouble amid stormy weather and sank 37 kilometers (23 miles) off Ulsan, an industrial city on the southeast coast.

The accident during training followed a separate navy mission on Sunday in which ships unsuccessfully searched for a possible North Korean submarine off the east coast. Military officials gave first details of that mission on Wednesday.

Nam said the sunken ship was engaged in routine training and was not involved in the submarine search, which took place in a different area.

"We had a search operation on intelligence about a possible North Korean submarine," Nam said. "We didn't consider the intelligence highly credible, but we dispatched our navy anyway because it involved possible submarines."

He said the navy dropped depth charges but found no evidence of a submarine infiltration.

Fears of North Korean submarines run high in South Korea.

In 1996, South Korea launched a massive military operation to hunt down 26 North Korean commandoes and crew who came ashore when their submarine ran aground on the South's east coast. All but two of the intruders were either killed or found dead. Thirteen South Koreans were also killed.

South Korea captured a North Korean spy submarine entangled in fishing nets off its east coast in 1998. Nine North Korean soldiers and crew were found inside, believed killed in a murder-suicide to avoid capture.

Secret operation fails to find North Korean subs

South Korea has admitted it has conducted a massive but secret naval operation to find two North Korean submarines.

The Defence Ministry says the hunt began on Sunday after the United States warned Seoul that two North Korean submarines were lurking in South Korean waters.

Surveillance planes and helicopters were dispatched, navy ships dropped depth charges but the operation failed to find any evidence of an incursion.

At the same time, four sailors from the South Korean navy are missing after their semi-submersible boat capsized.

They were participating in what the navy is calling an "anti-infiltration exercise".

Officials say the drill had nothing to do with the submarine hunt

Invading S. Korea is the final test for new RNK seals. If they come back, they graduate. Finding those 'invaders is a national pasttime for SK guard forces.

If the US can locate them and were on station with Navy destroyers, why can't the S Koreans keep the tail?

"The Defence Ministry says the hunt began on Sunday after the United States warned Seoul that two North Korean submarines were lurking in South Korean waters."

So we either have a spy or else we now have the technical means to detect the newer all-plastic chemical-electric subs...

Re #6

Rumors swirl around about this incident. On the one side, they say S. Korean Navy is incompetent. On the other side, some say that somebody inside S. Korean gov. tipped off N. Koreans in Pyongyang, making the subs run away in time. Still others say that there were actually a confrontation, N. Korean subs fired torpedoes, and S. Korean vessel(s) was/were hit, but they are covering up.

Since many suspect the pro-North tendencies of current S. Korean government, rumors were rife

Kim Jong-il will remain a popular evil character in the world long after he is gone. He has everything. Comical, weird, sinister, ruthless, ugly... You name it.

Re #17

No, I haven't heard either. Apparently, he is really busy. China drastically cut down food shipment since a several months ago. His army has been starving. Part of his army turned into marauding bandits. Now Chinese fear that some of them will turn up in China. The system has breaking down over there. It has been slow. Now the pace apparently picked up

Kim Jong-il is also building a network of road, tunnels, and underground facilities(bunkers) in a region where some mysterious explosion occurred not long ago(Yanggang Province, not Ryongchon.) It is supposedly his stronghold in case of crisis. I think that he is preparing for the worst.

By the way, it won't be just South Park. It will be James Bond, Startrek, Stargate, Mission Impossible. Any kind of fantasy suspense thrillers would love to have this Chia Fruit character.
