Go to website: http://www.austintollparty.com to get the details. There you will see a map outlining the plan to make all of Austin's EXISTING commuter highways part of a toll road system. The filthy rascals started building toll booths before the plan was "officially" approved by CAMPO. We have uncovered evidence of conflict of interest on part of some appointed politicans on the CAMPO board.
If you live in or around Austin, Texas your daily commute is about to become a LOT more expensive.

This is happening all over the state. The pols can't get enough of our tax dollars, so they've decided to charge us for ALL new highways. Too bad they can't curb their insidious demand for our money!

Not at all. This is a nonpartisan effort to tell elected officials from across the political spectrum that they better LISTEN to the public next time. A 17 cent per mile toll equals a $3.40 per gallon gas tax. We are attempting get an early election and replace rotten local policy makers.
We are pushing for an election. There are other methods than toll booths on existing highways.
What other methods? The federal gas tax is not enough to maintain our current roads and build additional...the state gas tax is distributed throughout the entire state and not all Austin taxes are kept in Austin...local taxation won't work because people passing through using the roads don't pay a tax for it...
What do you propose?
I'd gladly pay for some east-west thoroughfares in Austin. I swear, this is the hardest city to get around in that I have ever experienced.

Thanks DrewDad, I don't know Thomas' record, but McCracken is a flip flopper. I would not trust him when it counts. Really the only way to to fight is through the Commissioners. Austin is all liberal. Travis County is not.
IMO it's simple. we already know the existing taxes are sufficient to maintain the existing roads. So keep them free. NO existing road should be converted to a toll road.
Then build the tollways ONLY if there is a reasonable (existing) free route available. The people who benefit from the tollways will pay for them.
The problem is that existing highways that are long paid-for are being turned into tollways and the funds used to pay for projects across town or in another city.
Do you have any idea how much the gas tax would need to be raised to pay for the maintenance of existing roads and to develop new roads? Do you know how much longer it would take to get these roads built by using the gas tax as opposed to tolling as a mechanism to pay for these roads?????
Do you realize that EVERYONE in Austin whether they use these roads or not will be taxed if you raise the gas tax???? Let the people that use the road pay for the road. It is amazing that you people are so emotional and you create the angry mob mentality of JUST SAY NO AND FIRE/OUT FROM OFFICE SOMEONE FOR THINKING OF IT and yet you have no alternative solutions or suggestions that make any sense.
Have you been to any state or local gummint offices lately? All state of the art. I can remember when they were happy with corporate rejects. No more. The botom line is a line needs to be drawn somewhere. Toll roads might just be as good an issue as any???

By the way Deek, The Nighthawk on South Congress was ALLOWED to burn down after the fire started.I was working for the company at that time and can tell you things that you wouldnt believe. One of the cooks called the owners son when the fire started and he was told not to do anything until SON got there. Thirty minutes later, the fire is raging and only then do they call the fire dept. It was all about money. Remember how long it took to rebuild? It was all about money.

So if there is not a reasonable existing free route then you don't get new roads and you do not provide the infrastucture needed for growth and prosperity for your citizens. I am open to other suggestions but again, all I hear is "we don't want it" but you still want roads.....
