The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Ramadan terror concerns?
Full Story

ATLANTA (CNN) -- As more than one billion Muslims prepare to celebrate Ramadan, terror experts are mixed about whether the holy month is a tool for recruiting terrorists.

Some terrorism experts and Islamic scholars say Ramadan gives extremists an opportunity to enlist new recruits.

"It's a time which can be exploited by radical clerics to motivate individuals into taking action on the basis they are somehow serving their religion," says terror expert M.J. Gohel.

And analysts see another temptation for terrorists: exploiting the Battle of Badr, a symbolic date in Muslim history, which falls near the U.S. presidential election.

Alright, that does it. Something's wrong here.

We've got 2 to 3 small planes crashing daily for about a week now. Here's another!

Small Plane Crashes In Denton
No Injuries Reported

DENTON, Texas -- A small plane crashed about a half mile from Denton Municipal Airport Tuesday.

No injuries were reported. NBC 5's chopper was live at the crash site showing extensive damage to the Cessna aircraft.

The plane went down in a field about a half mile west of Interstate 35.

Turns out that the one in Atlanta today was a retired couple from the Sarasota area (namely a town called Nokomis).

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. (AP) — A commuter plane crashed in a wooded area in northeastern Missouri, killing at least five of the 12 people on board, the Federal Aviation Administration in Chicago said.

The plane crashed four miles south of the Kirksville airport, where it was headed, FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said. The plane, believed to have been a Corporate Express flight, was on a regular route from St. Louis when it crashed shortly after 7:30 p.m., she said.

The last communication from the Jetstream 32 twin turboprop indicated it was on a normal approach to Kirksville Regional Airport, and there was no mention of any problems, she said.

Cory did not know whether the number of people reported on board the plane included crew members.

Kirksville is about 220 miles northwest of St. Louis.

I just don't understand how these incidents aren't being taken seriously, unless they are and that information's not being relayed to us out here.

If I'm ever on a flight when this happens, I won't be flying on that airline again.

That was the name of the couple - John & Rae Ingram (J&R). He had a hangar at Venice airport.

This bothers me about the Atlanta crash:

"More than a dozen people in the busy neighborhood witnessed the crash and described a loud noise followed by the plane spinning toward the ground before hitting the one-story shop near the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site."

"It was twisting and turning. And then you could see, like an engine or something, slide off the plane," said Terrell Holloway, who was working at a nearby pizzeria when he heard what he described as an extremely loud "engine problem" and ran to the window to see the plane.

Al-Zarqawi's Group in Iraq Changes Name
http://www.grandforks.com/mld/grandforks/sports/football/nfl/minnesota_vikings/9961230.htm

CAIRO, Egypt - Tawhid and Jihad, the Iraqi militant group of terror mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, apparently has changed its name two days after announcing its merger with Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida organization.

An Internet statement released Tuesday under the purported new name, al-Qaida of Jihad in the Land of Two Rivers, claimed responsibility for an attack on a U.S. military convoy west of the Iraqi city of Fallujah the same day. The two rivers in the new name refers to the Euphrates and Tigris rivers in Iraq.

Witnesses in Habaniyah, west of the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah, reported seeing three American Humvees burning, but the U.S. military didn't comment on the alleged attack.

"A lion from the martyrdom brigades ... plowed into an American convoy that had entered Habaniyah," said the statement. The authenticity of the statement could not be independently verified.

"The brother, God accept him, managed to destroy five Hummer vehicles and all those inside," the statement added.

The claim was posted under the new name by Abu Maysara al-Iraqi, a pseudonym that al-Zarqawi's Tawhid and Jihad group had said was its legitimate source of information.

The statement, written in similar language to previous Tawhid and Jihad statements, also was posted on a Web site known as a clearing house for Islamic militants.

Al-Zarqawi's group declared allegiance to bin Laden, citing the need for unity against "the enemies of Islam," in an Internet statement posted Sunday. That statement also could not be verified.

The group has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks on American troops, Iraqi security personnel and the kidnapping and beheading of several foreigners.

Thank you ExSoldier. We ARE a family here, and a close one at that. No matter what we have done or are doing in the working world, we all have similar life experiences to share and have pretty much the same concerns about our loved ones (including pets), our friends (including those we've come to know here at FR/TM), our homes, our country and our way of life in America. More than ever we need TM now and the assistance of those who post relevant links, those who have knowledge of situations, locations, and individuals, and analytical wisdom to share with the rest of us (dot connectors - all of us).

Off topic: Indie, here's a story about that "chicken" company you were talking about. Tactics like this company uses are what cause some of our nations problems. Corporate greed abounds and there seems to be no end to it:

I need some super high powered binocs...and Christmas is coming and I am making my list...

In this age of digital cameras (and I love mine), that old 35 mm camera with telescopic lens can sometimes outdo the binoculars (at least there is still a use for it).

CHARITY URGES KIDNAPPED AID WORKER'S RELEASE
Meanwhile Care International Suspends Operations In Iraq

By Michael Ireland
Chief Correspondent, ASSIST News Service

BAGHDAD, IRAQ  (ANS) -- Islamic Relief USA, part of the Islamic Relief Worldwide charity and development group, today called for the release of Margaret Hassan, employed by CARE Australia as head of CARE's humanitarian relief operations in Iraq, according to The Australian newspaper, based on reports from correspondents in Los Angeles, California. (Pictured: Margaret Hassan, said to be a British-born Iraqi national, the director of CARE International's operation in Iraq, is seen in this image made from video footage May 20, 2003. Credit: AP).

"We call on Mrs Hassan's captives to recall the humanitarian work she has been doing in Iraq for over 25 years and release her so she can carry on her good work," said Arif Shaikh, a spokesman for the Burbank, California-based Islamic Relief USA.

The holy Islamic month of Ramadan, which began Friday, "is a month of mercy, and a month of charity," he said.

"It is during this month that the work of Mrs Hassan and CARE should be increased. We hope Mrs Hassan remains unharmed and is safely released to her family."

Islamic Relief Worldwide is a relief and development group operating in 28 countries. The group has been working in Iraq since 1997, and has worked with CARE on humanitarian projects in several countries, the newspaper said.

Mrs Hassan is married to an Iraqi, is a naturalized Iraqi citizen with dual nationality, and was seized while on her way to work in Baghdad, CARE officials said.

CARE INTERNATIONAL SUSPENDS AID OPERATIONS IN IRAQ

Meanwhile CARE International suspended its operations in Iraq today following the kidnapping of Mrs. Hassan, who was described as “an Irish-Iraqi woman who had been delivering aid to the ‘poorest of the poor’ in the country for more than 25 years.”

CARE's operations in Iraq have been suspended, CARE Australia Chief Executive Officer Robert Glasser told ABC radio today.

"Our staff are not operating currently there, they're certainly not working there now in light of the current situation," he said.

Margaret Hassan, the head of Iraq operations for CARE and employed through the organization's Australia branch was taken hostage about 2.30pm AEST (7.30am Iraqi time) yesterday, Glasser said.

CARE Australia's chief executive, Robert Glasser, in a report carried by www.NEWS.com.au,  (Australia) has confirmed the halt to operations, but is reluctant to talk about anything to do with the kidnapping given the delicate nature of Mrs Hassan's situation.

"It would be unhelpful for us to comment on what steps we are taking," he said. "Our overwhelming concern has to be for Margaret's safety."

The Australian website reports CARE earlier said it believed Mrs Hassan was unharmed. She is a British-born naturalized Iraqi who has worked for CARE since 1992, has lived in Iraq for 30 years, and is married to an Iraqi.

Robert Glasser said Mrs Hassan was under contract with the organization's Australian branch.

"We're directly involved in steps to secure her release," he said. "We're doing whatever we can, so it's something we're taking very, very seriously."

'IRAQ'S HER HOME'

A CARE spokeswoman said the organization had no idea who had kidnapped Mrs Hassan or what their demands might be, but was keen to stress that Mrs Hassan saw herself as part of the Iraqi community.

"We want to stress that she sees herself as an Iraqi. Iraq is her home. She has been living there for many years and would never consider coming back to Britain," the spokeswoman said.

She declined to say whether Ms Hassan was in a vehicle at the time of the abduction, or whether she was alone. The abduction comes just over two weeks after kidnappers beheaded British hostage Kenneth Bigley.

CARE International is one of the world's largest independent global relief and development organizations. It operates in more than 72 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. It is also one of the only international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to maintain a continuous presence in Iraq.

Most others pulled their remaining foreign staff out the country after two Italian aid workers were kidnapped for three weeks in September.
