The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

ATLANTA (CNN) -- As more than one billion Muslims prepare to celebrate Ramadan, terror experts are mixed about whether the holy month is a tool for recruiting terrorists.

Some terrorism experts and Islamic scholars say Ramadan gives extremists an opportunity to enlist new recruits.

"It's a time which can be exploited by radical clerics to motivate individuals into taking action on the basis they are somehow serving their religion," says terror expert M.J. Gohel.

And analysts see another temptation for terrorists: exploiting the Battle of Badr, a symbolic date in Muslim history, which falls near the U.S. presidential election.

I got the same thing and like an idiot I opened it. It's a spam thing fishing for your info, I think. No virus that I can detect, but then, I'm on a MAC and they usually don't affect me. Although I do have multiple virus/spyware software running anyway! It was blatantly obvious that the message didn't come from yahoo, since it was partially encrypted and didn't fully translate. Maybe it originated from overseas? Hmmmmmm

Thought you'd be interested to know that we had another small plane crash in MO last night near Bible Grove, MO. This is approx. 30 miles from Kirksville, where the plane filled with doctors crashed. This makes #4. However, there were thunderstorms in that area. Who knows?

It is possible this is an Italy reference as that has come up before. But the primary meaning of UBL is that he is giving a pre-emptive justification for the severity of the attacks by tying America and Israel together since Lebanon when Sharon led the Israeli Army in attempting to expel Arafat and Hezbollah was given birth.

He is also giving "props to his homies" in Tehran, Damascus, and Beirut (Mughniyah, Jerusalem Force, and Hezbollah).

The Mahdi Myth may be used to justify and implement an Iranian "Tariq al-Qods". Sharon's life is in danger, not just from Jewish terrorists among the settlers and rabbis identified by the Shin Bet, but by al Qaeda itself. The Taba attack may be a prelude to a more direct attack. Promised retribution for Yassin, Rantisi, and Khalil.

The center of the universe is now Israel.
Anything done here has that as the ultimate objective.

Bin Laden hints major assassination

U.S. intelligence officials say a high-profile political assassination, triggered by the public release of a new message from Osama bin Laden, will lead off the next major al Qaeda terrorist attack, The Washington Times has learned.

The assassination plan is among new details of al Qaeda plots disclosed by U.S. officials familiar with intelligence reports who, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the killing could be carried out against a U.S. or foreign leader either in the United States or abroad.

The officials mentioned Saudi Arabia and Yemen, two nations that are working with the United States in the battle against al Qaeda, as likely locales for the opening assassination. . . .

"The message likely will be the signal for the attack to be launched," one official said.

Ok I'm not sure which link it was I clicked on but it was from this thread posted sometime yesterday. It was an islamic website in complete arabic but what caught my eye was a picture of the Pope & a map.

If you are anyone cares to respond about this what are your thoughts on the Pope being the target of the assassination?

I believe ExSoldier has mentioned the usefulness of firearms to stave-off looters. Once people notice that you seem to have it together they might try to help themselves. Sounds like you're in pretty good shape.

My pro-gun family on the other hand is not so well prepared. We don't even have a shotgun. What a bunch of dufuses! Oh well, maybe my stockpile of pepper-spray will hold off the hordes.

I just heard that too. They usually leak the fact that they might raise the alert level before they actually do. I'd bet my bottom dollar they will raise it today.

I reckon the clips and transcripts of the tape we have seen amount to about five minutes. This tape was supposed to have been eighteen minutes long and al-Jazeera acknowledged they didn't play all of it.

I heard yesterday that the U.S state department tried to dissuade al-Jazeera from playing the tape. Here's what I think...they were partially successful. They managed to suppress some of it but not all.

I've been a lurker on the TM possibly since the beginning. I haven't registered/posted because you all are doing a very fine job, I thank all of you for the quick and concise information that you get.

This OBL tape has me a bit confused because weren't we supposed to see one AFTER an attack, proclaiming his so called victory?

It seems a bit premature, or unexpected to say the least. Nevertheless seeing that a$$holes ugly mug has me rather perterbed.

Stay safe everyone, these seem like very fragile times and keep up the good work. I will contribute if I can.

The Pope is a possible target. It has come up before.

I think the focus for them right now is the American election and the Israeli/Palestinian issue with Iraq coming up a close third with tentative January elections and a possible all-out assault on Fallujah.

But just because these are the front-burner issues at the moment does not mean other targets will not emerge in the rapidly changing situation (Musharraf, Mubarak, King Hussein, Saudi royals, Allawi, Karzai, etc). On 9/11 they had prefered targets and prefered times, but they were flexible and exploited opportunities. They have a target list. Like UBL stated, "Sweden" is not on it. (But I thought they were at one point, or maybe it was Norway). Not all targets or all times are created equal. There are "high value targets" (value in quality as well as quantity) and "high value times". Also, they are not omnipresent, omniscient, or omnipotent. They have to choose their battles.

The Pope is near the top of the list even though right now the focus seems to be elsewhere.

The value of him as a target for them is to give credence to their "spin" that this is a war of civilizations (that Islam is being attacked by a Jewish-Christian conspiracy)as an attack on the Pope will inflame over a billion Catholics worldwide and will create new opportunities for them to escalate the global struggle.

Same reason why body counts and WMD are the holy grail for them. It massively escalates the global struggle and thereby validates their ideology of hate and creates a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It is a psychological war/political-media campaign targeting a global audience of both Christians and Muslims. I think the strategy is shrewd as they are trying to peel off coalition democracies (Spain, Philippines, etc)and split the U.S. from within in order to attain objectives with a carrot and stick approach.

(eg. "Vote for Bush and you are voting for war against us and attacks against your state. Vote against Bush and you are voting for peace and a respite from violence.")

Same as the 90-day truce in Europe.

I am not sure going after the Pope at this moment serves their purposes. They are trying to create division both in America and the Western world as a whole. Killing the Pope would offend and incite many Christians, not just Catholics. That would be hard to explain. They are trying to create a temporary "breathing space" for themselves by giving us a "way out" (like they did the Spanish, Italians, Filipinos, etc) so they can focus on attaining their regional objectives and consolidating "the base" for further stages of global jihad.

They need to keep Europe divided not only to keep them from helping us stabilize Iraq but also so they do not intervene when Israel's number comes up. Same message to us in the UBL video. They want us to believe that if we just left the region, surrendered the fight, and rendered the emerging democracies of Iraq and Afghanistan, our moderate allies such as Egypt and Jordan, and above all, Israel to their tender mercies, then they would leave us alone. . . .

. . .until they had consolidated the regional base in a nuclear-armed Caliphate stretching from Africa to the Subcontinent, and then continued the call to subdue the rest of the world in the name of Islam. Their appeals to the American people are nothing but a siren song.

But take nothing for granted as they are opportunistic and their command and control cannot be as functional as it was pre-9/11. Lots of loose cannons out there could start freelancing if the global situation becomes chaotic. . .

Or if we have a sudden break and take their top leadership out of the equation, causing the rest of the terror networks to start flailing around like the proverbial chicken with its head cut off.
