Rushing to prevent another terror attack won't work
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,3-1328972,00.html
...excerpt...
PRESIDENT BUSHS showiest response to the national shock of September 11 may fall completely flat, it now seems.
This week, relatives of those who died that day have been pleading with him to put into practice at least some of the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission. The President, who is keen to do so by the time of the election a week today, has been urging Congress to pass the Bill.
But so far, nothing doing. Since a serious push began on Wednesday, the House of Representatives and the Senate are deadlocked. Taking the White Houses direction that something must be done, they have each crafted versions of the Bill thatare starkly incompatible.
The Senate is wary of the Pentagon, the House indulgent. But the heart of the problem is that both versions conspire in the political fiction that future attacks can and should be stopped, and that melding together the USs 15 separate spy agencies is the way to do it.
To me, the (message of 9/11 is) that intelligence is never going to be good enough to get these things before they happen, says one senior member of the Administration, sceptical, he says, of most of the proposed reforms.
The impetus for this last-minute Bill is the 567-page report by the 9/11 Commission, a bipartisan committee set up by the Administration. The text has become a surprise bestseller with more than a million copies sold, and is now a contender for the National Book Award's non-fiction prize, one of the USs top literary awards.

Re # 1627
Good article Cindy. I'm a firm believer that everyone should be armed. An armed society is a polite society.
Small, coordinated shooting attacks could very well cause the entire populace to stay indoors for fear of being shot. That could bring our economy to a screeching halt.
I remember how scared people were around here when Malvo and Muhammad were running around shooting people at random. I remember seeing people taking cover behind their cars when pumping gas - even paying someone else to pump it for them. Most of my co-workers were terrified.
I was angry. Very angry. I was wishing I could get a shot at them. I actually put my hunting rifle in the trunk of my car (Remington 700 in a .270 caliber). While Im not the best shot, I can get 3 inch groups at 300 yards.
For lack of one small .38 snub nose on the planes on 9/11/01, thousands died.
Folks, if you haven't already, get yourself a firearm and LEARN to use it SAFELY. The NRA offers some really good firearms training. Most gun ranges also offer classes. If youre not familiar with firearms, take the class FIRST.
Firearms are merely tools and tools in the wrong hands are more of a liability than an asset. They in no way guarantee your survival, but they sure can level the playing field.
I remember a line from the movie Red Dawn:
We're all going to die. Die standing up.
Now is not the time for weak knees or faint hearts. Now is the time to stand tall and defend yourself and your families.
YW, granny ....
Interesting re: the guy under the tracks. But, heck ... LOTS of reasons for a guy to be under the tracks, folks do it EVERY day, huh?
RE: Cuba.
Well, to be honest re: the link, the fact that they will not allow US dollars after 11/7 kind of jumps out at me ...
Then the location hit me ... Cuba!?!?! CUBA?!?!? CUBA doesn't want to accept US dollars .... dang! The sky is falling indeedy .... (j/k)
I thought the same thing. I wonder who Cuba is talking with...Russia, North Korea?
The BART system has a 3rd rail that supplies electricity to the trains. Shut down is a must-do inorder to deal with the situation. Individual my already be dead IF he touched the 3rd rail.
"f we start believing the propaganda by some on our side that this is us against all of Islam, then we will never see what this is all about. The Islamic world is not yet in bed with the idea of world jihad, that is why folks like al-Sadr (and maybe UBL) are *campaigning* for the office of Caliph or Mahdi. If the Moslems are already all fighting us, they need not be persuaded by UBL. But everything since 9/11 (including 9/11 and the attacks before) is a relentless, methodical, and strategic effort to win the hearts and minds of a billion Muslims."
You are right about the timing but I beg to differ on the propaganda issue of "this is us against all of Islam, then we will never see what this is all about."
I have no problem in understanding that the islamic world might not be in bed with the jihad but perhaps they are preparing for bedtime just the same much like the lukewarm Christian keeping one eye on the local preacherman/spiritual insurance agent (just in case he's right and fire & brimstones start falling) while duplicitly bending the rules at every chance, and there is a chance for all we (and by now we tmers know a heck of a lot) know a greater proportion does align with the radicals. We cannot fully discern at this juncture where to draw a line on this but it behooves us to draw it non the less for the safety and welfare of our country.
I do think you are on to something with the OBL shake down the Muslim world Al Mahdi possibility. It is more a coerced blackmail than a campaign. This scenerio fits if he is alive, given his lack of appearance and his grandiose ego. May I suggest another possibility unaffected by OBL's condition (moldy, in smithereens or uremic)...that one of his sons has been well groomed for this act.
