Live From N.Y.: A Republican!

By Julia Gorin, Washington Post, 10/10/04

NEW YORK

I watch the forty-something couple survey our outdoor table from three feet away. The woman shakes her head and covers her mouth with one hand. The man speaks quietly into her ear. I imagine he's telling her not to be afraid, that everything will be okay. Even after I ask her to share her thoughts, she can't find her voice. The cause of her shock and awe? (Okay, "awe" may not be the mot juste here.) It's a "Bush-Cheney 2004" table that graced a street corner near Madison Square Garden for a dozen Saturdays recently.

We sold pro-Bush pins, bumper stickers and T-shirts, with slogans like "Ten out of Ten Terrorists Agree: Anybody but Bush." Our aim was to let the odd conservative in New York City know that -- believe it or not -- he or she is not alone. And to show our more "traditional" fellow New Yorkers that we're not hiding anymore. No, we're proud to be red (if you must call us that) in this blazingly "blue" city.

And no, we're not crazy. Just a bit bold, and tired of ceding the public square to the left, which flaunts its colors everywhere.

Akron, Ohio is Democrat enough for me, I don't know if I could handle NYC.

This was good:
Still, the far more common shadow that fell across our table was definitely cast in blue. Like the man who kept saying, "I can't understand why you support Bush." When my friend Kevin replied, "If you can't understand why half the country supports Bush, you need to get out more," the man deadpanned: "I get out plenty. I'm a college professor." As our group laughed in stereo, he yelled, "Anti-intellectuals!" and stormed off.

Yup that's it, we are 'anti-intellectuals'. LOL.

I'm not interested in trying to handle NYC. I hate everything about that place.

For any New Yorkers who might be upset with my stance, sorry, but it won't work to try to change my mind.

AWESOME article.

FYI, I wore my 10 out of 10 T-shirt this weekend in Central PArk and had 3 positive comments. One from a passing NYPD patrol car where the officer said "finally someone with the right shirt on".

Have you ever been to NYC? I live Upstate, about 6 hours away. Trust me, here in conservative-land, I hate NYC politics, too. And I would never live on a rock with 12,000,000 other people, either. But NYC is a nice place to visit. In fact, I'm going there this weekend.

Hating everything about the place is stupid... where else on Earth can you get food from every culture in the world within 15 blocks?

:-)

Sorry, it's too noisy and crowded. People aren't exactly the nicest in the world. Plus just the general attitude that I have seen there leads me to believe that most people in NYC consider themselves and their city to the be the most important in the nation.

I don't like any of that. I don't have any problems with the rest of New York State.

Just NYC.

I m a new yorker but I agree manhattan smells like piss in the summer. Although in general NYC is a good place. Lived here for 12 years ever since came to America great place.
In some aspects like the capital markets new york city is pretty important if you consider the ammount of capital created a day by the city its mind boggling. I donno I like brooklyn I like my neighborhood and the people are ok sure half are snoby beyond belief but you cant pay attention to them.
