Singles vote for Bush as their ideal date

Forget about who should be president for a second. Who would you rather date: George Bush or John Kerry?

According to a survey of 5,000 single men and women by the dating service It's Just Lunch, Bush wins this race.

Of about 2,500 women polled, 49 percent said they'd rather date the president, while about one-third of singles said they would prefer Democratic challenger John Kerry. And 15 percent would go out with candidate Ralph Nader.

Bush also wins as most charming, with 54 percent of survey participants voting for him. Forty percent found Kerry most charming; Nader got 6 percent.

What's the point of this survey?

A candidate's looks matter, that's what. Eighty percent said a candidate's physical attractiveness matters to them. In another question asked on most attractive politicians, 42 percent said Bill Clinton is the most attractive; California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was second with 34 percent of the vote. Nineteen percent voted for Bush, and only 5 percent voted for Kerry.

The male and female singles in this survey -- who must have a lot of time on their hands to think about these things -- said twins Barbara and Jenna Bush were more attractive than Kerry's daughters, Vanessa and Alexandra.

If Bill Clinton won as the most attractive then I'm a bombshell. I'm free this weekend.

I know this kind of poll seems silly but I'm convinced that appearance, charm, charisma, youth, etc. plays a part in who wins elections. Take the debates for example, they aren't won by the person who gives better answers, they're won by who "comes across better".

Look at these contests:

1960 Kennedy-Nixon*
1964 Johnson-Goldwater
1968 Nixon-Humphrey
1972 Nixon-McGovern
1976 Carter-Ford**
1980 Reagan-Carter*
1984 Reagan-Mondale*
1988 Bush-Dukakis*
1992 Clinton-Bush**
1996 Clinton-Dole**
2000 Bush-Gore

* Winner more handsome
** Winner more youthful

IMHO 7 of 11 (64%) races were won by the more handsome or more youthful candiate. There's one case (Bush-Gore) of equally handsome and at least two cases (Johnson-Goldwater, Nixon-Humphrey) of equally ugly. But with the possible exception of Nixon-McGovern I don't see any race won by the uglier man.

Other opinions?

Most of the women probably looked at their checkbooks and when they didn't see a balance of over a billion dollars figured they didn't have much chance getting a date with Kerry anyway. May as well take the fun guy who doesn't care how much you have.
