LBJ's grandson to speak to Tejano Democrats
Corpus Christi Caller-Times ^ | October 11, 2004 | Matthew Sturdevant

President Lyndon B. Johnson's only grandson will speak about civil rights during the Tejano Democrats' state convention Sunday at the Omni Bayfront Hotel

Johnson's grandson, Lyndon Nugent, is the honorary chair of the "Take Back Texas" campaign, an effort to get more Democrats elected into office in Texas. He is an attorney in the San Antonio office of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, LLP.

"Lyndon comes from a family with a deep commitment to civil rights and the Tejano community," Aaron Pena, chairman of the state Tejano Democrats, said in a prepared statement. "We, the children and grandchildren of these giants of the past, come together on this weekend to remember their legacy and plan for our future."

This year is the 40th anniversary of President Johnson's call for a civil rights bill as a monument to the fallen John F. Kennedy. On July 2, 1964, Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The convention is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the Omni.

Victor Garza, a spokesman for the Tejano Democrats, said he expects a few hundred people to attend the convention. The group later this week will determine a price for nonmembers who would like to attend Nugent's talk at noon Sunday.

For reservations, call the Omni at 800-843-6664 and mention the Tejano Democrats. Info: www.tejanodemocrats.org

That's how LBJ got *elected* to the Senate in 1948. IIRC they guy he beat was nicknamed Pappy something or other.

I taught his sister how to ride a horse.

Unfortunately, these kids have no clue what the true legacy of their grandfather is. Lady Bird, however, should be immortalized. How she put up with Lyndon all those years I'll never know. But she's the real deal, a true Southern lady.

In 1941, Johnson ran for the U.S. Senate in a special election against the sitting governor of Texas, radio personality W. Lee "Pappy" O' Daniel. Johnson was defeated in a series of controversial late returns.

the "Take Back Texas" campaign, an effort to get more Democrats elected into office in Texas.

Before they tackle "more", they need to start with "any." Local races don't count.

No, the guy he cheated out of the Senate seat in Texas was Coke Stevenson.

I like how they found some late ballots all written in the same handwriting in alphabetical order. Awfully considerate of the voters.

Didn't LBJ win in 1948 by 87 votes? To send him to the US Senate for the first time.

Lyndon Bird has his work cut out for him. Texas is not the Texas of grandpappy's day. For that we can all be thankful.

"Johnson's grandson, Lyndon Nugent, is the honorary chair of the "Take Back Texas" campaign..."

If he were chairing a "Give Back Texas" campaign to return the land that his grandpappy stole (through condemnation) from his neighbors to create the LBJ Ranch I'd be a lot more impressed.
