GOP winning over north valley (California)

Registered Democrats now minority in Stanislaus, San Joaquin counties.

Regardless of the reason, Republicans have persuaded more voters to register on their side in the past four years and now outnumber Democrats in Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties, according to the latest voter registration tallies at the secretary of state's office.

Before the last presidential election, more voters in the Northern San Joaquin Valley were registered as Democrats than Republicans. San Joaquin Republicans took the lead in 2002 and Stanislaus Republicans were edging out Democrats by the March primary this year.

Overall, voter registration in Merced, San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties has increased 9 percent since 2000.

"They're really switching over, not in great masses, but it's a steady changeover," said Jim DeMartini, chairman of the Stanislaus County Republican Central Committee and incoming county supervisor. "The Democrats have just gotten so liberal."

Here's an idea. Let's give LA, San Diego, Oakland and San Fran, and call it the State of South Kommifornia. Or whatever name they'd like to call themselves.

Then the rest of the state can be North California.

The valley is turning GOP exclusively 'cause of republican flight from the SF Bay Area.

BTW I'd agree with your suggestion if we could keep a section of coast. We conservatives need a deep water port.

North California has been a front porch topic for years.

I remember listening as my Grandpa talked about it with his buddies.

North Cali would need to extend down to SF for economic purposes and who wants SF?

Not all of us here in America's Finest City are looney Lefties...in fact, Bush garnered more votes per county in San Diego last election than in Northern California.

The north valley is that area north of Sacramento. At best these counties are Central California.

I'm one who fled the Bay Area for the Central Valley and I would vote for a state split in a heartbeat. The only problem is that it would NEVER happen. The libs in the cities know that they control us and they have no reason to agree to letting us go. They'll just take our water, pollute our air, and tell us that it's our problem, all while announcing that we must accept gay marriage and insane anti-business regulations.

I heard Michael Medved today state that outside of Iowa and NH, the recent surge in registered voters across the nation is benefiting the Republicans.

Interesting, but the GOP should not put too much into the recall of an especially inept and unpopular governor and the election of a very popular movie star.

I still get a laugh over the fact that George B. Schwartzman came in 9th place in the recall.

Here are some better maps of how California counties voted on the recall, to give a better sense of where the counties are (from the California Secretary of State site):

I don't think this will help Bush win the state, but if it puts more Republicans in the state assembly, state senate, and increases their number in the congressional delegation then it will be a positive result.
