CONYERS - A Rockdale County judge is frustrated with the high cost of interpeters and says he will start requiring proof that defendants cannot speak English.
He says some people are pretending not to be fluent just to delay criminal proceedings.
Sidney Nation, a Rockdale County Superior Court judge, says he will start having formal hearings on the need for an interpeter because his public defenders' office has exceeded its $2,500 budget for interpeters.
A case in August involving Vietnamese defendants required four interpeters in the courtroom during the plea proceedings, two of which were paid for by the state. Nation ultimately determined that three of the individuals could speak English. Two had actually graduated from American high schools.
Nation said non-English speaking defendants, especially those who are in the country illegally, have become a "crushing problem" for the courts.
What do Mexicans & a cue ball have in common? The harder you hit them, the more english they pick up.
I know this is in poor taste, but . . . I had to post it.
Shades of "The Gods Must Be Crazy"
It's gone. The America our grandparents (or great grandparents, you get the point) came to is gone forever. No longer are immigrants expected to become a part of our culture and adding to it, they now demand America bow to their culture.
My next door neighbor is from Mexico. He says he doesn't speak English very well, but he has been learning enough that he speaks a kind of Spanglish. We communicate easily. He speaks English much better than I can speak Spanish.
"I weel not buy thees record -- eet ees scratched!"
Close enough, it works for me.
Would you send the English-speakers back to England?
California, Land of Liberals, has spent money on this for a long time.
Part of the cost of treating Worker's Compensation cases is
TRANSLATION SERVICES.
It is not unusual for people to get convicted by a judge or jury, then appeal, claiming they REALLY didn't understand what was going on.
To me, it is all BS! LEARN ENGLISH!
Demcratas aproach to the problem: Lets hire Judges from Vietnam, China, Cuba, Syria, Iran.....
It's totally out of control. I spoke with an insurance adjuster the other day, and he told me 90 percent of their workers compensation injury cases now involve Spanish speakers that claim they don't speak English. He says were all paying for this massive pandering to these people. He said his company, (a major insurance firm) are now paying hundreds of thousands for interpreters and they are just passing the cost onto the insurance consumers.
The joke is on us!
"An inability to speak english will get you out of a vehicle stop with fourteen passengers in a car with two seats, no licensed driver, no insurance, invalid registration, and no emmissions sticker."
Not in my community....I worked with a police officer who pulled over a car that was driven by a person who couldn't speak English. The car's registration was expired, and the cop had no choice but to impound the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle didn't understand what was going on due to the fact that he couldn't speak English...or so he said. The cop wanted the driver to know why the car was being impounded so he began to rap to him and I quote "Okay, here's the situation, your car is being impounded, because you have no registration."
The driver still didn't understand...or so he claimed, but I laughed about that for a long time.
At least in Germany (and I guess this rule is widely approved in the West) the state pays for the interpreters, no matter whether you win or lose the trial.

Explain to the defendant that the budget for interpreters is exhausted. He has two choices. He can provide his own interpreter at his expense. Alternatively, he can return to the lockup and start brushing up on his English. When he becomes sufficiently proficient that he doesn't need an interpreter, he should let us know, and we'll reschedule the trial.
interpeters
??????????
Once is an honest mistake, but 3 times?????????????
I do agree with the judge - good on him.
"Would you send the English-speakers back to England?"
Only if they have an english accent
My aproach: Lets put them in Jail until they learn English!
"Would I get an interpreter in their court, and if so would it be at my cost or the country where I was arrested cost?"
Your cost, but it's not too hard to find someone that speaks English - except in parts of this country...

I take it Judge Nation (great name) isn't a Clinton appointee. |
