BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. marines engaged in heavy clashes with scores of insurgents near a mosque in western Iraq on Monday, leading to U.S. air strikes which damaged the mosque and left it ablaze, the U.S. military said.
A U.S. military spokesman said marines came under fire from around 100 insurgents near the town of Hit, about 107 miles west of Baghdad, and engaged in an hour-long firefight.
Air support was called in after the guerrillas took up positions around a mosque in the town. "The mosque is partially damaged and currently on fire," the spokesman said.

They just want to hear of or see mosques burning for the hell of it, not because they lost Geneva protection.

Our past unwillingness to blow mosques into little bitty peices is akin to giving in to a threat of terror.Bologna. It is a sign of the strength of our civilization; that we are not barbarians or out to get Islam like the terrorists say we are.
But, then again, many FReepers would do just that - be so offensive to Muslims that they'd all rise against the West just as Osama wants them to.

Are they trying to imply that we go 'round burning mosques just for fun? Most of the posts on this thread advocate exactly that.

Nope. Just their mosques, at least in the countries where they are used as meeting and hiding places.

Awesome picture of the Spirit.
And some are stationed at Whiteman AFB, where I was stationed in the late 60s. I thought it was a good candidate for closure as it seemed old and dilapidated back then - as was Knob Noster.

Do you think those are 500 lbers being dropped?
The target is going to look like a moonscape.
To: TexKat
The first one's the hardest.
If it was made clear from the start that any fire whatsoever from a mosque would invite its destruction, our body count would be a lot lower, and the mass murderers would take us more seriously.
I would expect nothing different were we firing from churches.

"I'm here in Operation Iraqi Freedom. We are killing the terrorists. They can't hide. gcraig, thanks so much for your service !! You have our "12", and come November 2, we are trying to make sure your "6" is covered back here at home.
I have to admit, the USAF must be batting 1,000 in the "wedding disruption" department !! Keep up the good work, and I hope you return home safe and sound.
PS....you have freepmail.
