Actor Christopher Reeve Dead at 52
Monday, October 11, 2004
BEDFORD, NY Christopher Reeve, the star of the "Superman" movies whose near-fatal riding accident nine years ago turned him into a worldwide advocate for spinal cord research, died Sunday of heart failure, his publicist said. He was 52.
Reeve fell into a coma Saturday after going into cardiac arrest while at his New York home, his publicist, Wesley Combs told The Associated Press by phone from Washington, D.C., on Sunday night.
Reeve was being treated at Northern Westchester Hospital for a pressure wound, a common complication for people living with paralysis. In the past week, the wound had become severely infected, resulting in a serious systemic infection.
"On behalf of my entire family, I want to thank Northern Westchester Hospital for the excellent care they provided to my husband," Dana Reeve, Christopher's wife, said in a statement. "I also want to thank his personal staff of nurses and aides, as well as the millions of fans from around the world who have supported and loved my husband over the years."
Reeve broke his neck in May 1995 when he was thrown from his horse during an equestrian competition in Culpeper, Va.

Don't believe he was in that movie.
Mr. Reeve was an unabashed liberal and no doubt his death will be exploited by the Dems.
Damn.
Christopher Reeve was not in "Sleuth". You're probably thinking of "Deathtrap", which was a very similar kind of film. And Michael Caine was in both films, which makes confusion between the two even more likely.
In defense of nurses everywhere, including the ones who were taking care of my aunt while she developed her bedsore, sometimes the patient's condition makes it right next to impossible to prevent these things. I say this as a 'retired' ICU nurse who also worked in home care and saw lots of them.
I've never seen so many pulled posts on one thread. What the heck are you all saying on a eulogy thread that's so offensive? Whatever it is, it's probably shameful.
What happened? I got up briefly during the night and saw a post in another thread that he had died so I looked for a thread about it and couldn't find one that wasn't immediately pulled or locked. So I went back to bed not really knowing if it was even true. What's up with that? This is the first thread I've seen where I could find any facts.
He was a courageous man who lived a very difficult life with grace and aplomb. May he rest in peace and may his family be blessed with memories of his valiant choice to live.
Inquiring minds want to know!
R.I.P Superman
Just riding them didn't cause his accident -- he was jumping them --- like there's a difference between taking a car for a Sunday drive and racing cars. It was sad --- he was a good horseman but accidents do happen. I'm sorry he had to die this way and too young.
Advancing years have absolutely no impact. Repeat after me: Advancing years. . . what was I saying?
If I understand your post, I agree.
My comments would get me banned.
I despised him, I will leave it at that.
And look for John Kerry to politicize his death and blame Bush for it at the next debate.
That's why I was so vague. I'm not going to shed any tears when Peter Singer goes, either.
I think people need to remember who the person IS (or was) and not the roles they played as actors/actresses because that is from written scripts. But with that I think many times they (actors/actresses) do not separate art from reality (Charlie Sheen is one: I think he views himself as President). With that I think that is why he thought he would recover with the use of embryonic stem cells, instead of using his OWN stem cells, which could have had a better effect.
I guess I am not as vague.
I've been wanting to make that point, also. Chris Reeve had only been riding for a couple of years and was doing something I wouldn't do with 35 years riding experience. Jumping cross country is DANGEROUS, Chris had lots of money to spend on horses that were out of his league and probably had trainers telling him how great he was and was pushing him to do more than he should. Jumping is hard and shouldn't be attempted by someone who learns to ride as an adult. You get a better feel for it when you start riding at a very young age, imo. Like gymnastics.
Well it has begun
