Belarus Unveils Memorial to KGB Founder Dzerzhinsky
MosNews
Belarus president Alexander Lukashenko, criticized in the West for his authoritarian tendencies, presented the public with a new memorial to Soviet secret police founder Felix Dzerzhinsky at a ceremony in the Minsk region Thursday.
The united principles and high aims established by our predecessors are a good foundation for strengthening ties between our special forces, Interfax quoted the Belarus president as saying at the opening ceremony, held in Dzerzhinskys home town, now named Dzerzhinovo, where the memorial was erected.
Russia has forged close ties with the former Soviet state, now its closest economic partner among all the CIS states. Calling terrorism the plague of the 21st century, Lukashenko emphasized the fight against it as the number one priority in cooperation among special forces in the two countries.
But what we build on that foundation, and how it works, will depend only on us, on our special forces.
The president added that what his country was currently going through was similar to the hardships suffered by the country at the time of the creation of the secret police in the 1920s. It was created by a great man, Felix Edmundovich Dzerzhinsky.
Polish born revolutionary Felix Dzerzhinsky headed Soviet Russias first secret police, the CheKa (Extraordinary Commission for Combating Counterrevolution and Sabotage) in 1917. The CheKa was instrumental in suppressing counter-revolutionary activities and carrying out the Red Terror. It was the predecessor of the KGB and todays FSB.
Ping!
Belarus is run by a Putin puppet.
Yep, birds of a feather...
Have they named the square the "Treblinka Square"? /sarcasm
Nice touch!
"Polish born revolutionary Felix Dzerzhinsky" -
As with anyone who leaves a mark on history - There are people who see the person one way - and then there are others who see the same person in another light -
It would be interesting to "know" what is causing the "troubled times" in that area today - perhaps that would go a long way in explaining the words spoken -
just a thought -
I think honoring the former head of the secret police and principle organizer of the "Red Terror" goes a long way in explaining the "troubled times" in that neck of the woods. I have also heard that V. Putin has himself honored the bloody past of this evil man. It seems the more things change, the more things stay the same.
Well there are people today who still honor Hitler -
People will be people -
I believe as with other troubled areas in the world - outside influence is involved(and I think we saw that with the other area when the school was attacked- what once was a cause has been hijacked and turned into terrorism carried out by scum).
If that is the case - that nation has a right to do what is best for its people. Just as President Bush has a right to do the best he can to protect this nation.
Those people love to wear a yoke around their necks, they do not feel normal without one.
Do you know of any NATIONS that still honor Hitler???
I posted: "Well there are people today who still honor Hitler - "
Now who is to say if those people make up a nation -
My point was about people - for every issue - there are two sides. And you will always find people on "each" side.
If someone believes that everyone else on earth believes as they do - that someone needs help - in my opinion -

I agree that one can look at an issue from multiple angles. My problem with your post is that you sound like you are endorsing moral relativism. For instance, you can examine Hitler from all kinds of angles, but it only stregthens the case that he was evil. The case Hitler made against the Jews, and the case the Jews made against Hitler, was no mere difference of opinion. Hitler was a mass murderer, and the Jews and others were the victims.
One thing to Dzerzhinsky's credit is that he most likely had the enourmously evil Stalin poisoned.
That would have been Mr. Beria.
Ping! Interesting point above. Any thoughts on the subject?
From the first post: "The president added that what his country was currently going through was similar to the hardships suffered by the country at the time of the creation of the secret police in the 1920s."
It would be nice to be able to figure out what he is talking about - "what his country was currently going through was similar to the hardships suffered by the country at the time of the creation of the secret police - "
Now - from that - I take it he is saying he thought the creation was a good thing - so natually I was wondering what the "hardships" were - both back then and today -
He sees things one way and evidently you don't agree - which is fine - I was just wondering what has caused his view -
Hitler rose to power around/or soon after - the time the secret police came into being - 1920 - 1930 - 1940 - eventful years that went on to impact the world. (And what went on then is still "coming out" from hidden records as the article about France aiding the Nazi action against the jews showed)
Events of today just didn't happen overnight - either. In order to prevent history from repeating itself, one must understand the past -
