Bush Has 5-Point Lead in New Poll

By Richard Morin and Christopher Muste Washington Post Staff Writers Tuesday, October 5, 2004; Page A06

President Bush continues to lead Sen. John F. Kerry among likely voters despite surging enthusiasm for Kerry among Democrats and new doubts about whether the president has a clear plan to deal with terrorism and the situation in Iraq, according to a Washington Post tracking poll.

In the aftermath of last week's debate, Bush leads Kerry 51 percent to 46 percent among those most likely to vote, according to polling conducted Friday through Sunday. Independent candidate Ralph Nader claims 1 percent of the hypothetical vote.

Did anybody see this poll mentioned on Sunday shows? If not, why might that be the case?

The 51 is huge! This is the very first nation-wide poll in which Bush polls that high.
Good for the good guys!

(sounding blonde)

How can the ABC/Washington Post poll have Bush up by four but this report has Bush up by five?

and new doubts about whether the president has a clear plan to deal with terrorism and the situation in Iraq

Who has these doubts?
I think it is actually the opposite. Kerry acquitted himself rhetorically well enough in the first debate to temporarily suspend people's doubt in Kerry's complete lack of a plan or understanding of the global war on terrorism.

Yeah, c'mon, guys. Be careful when posting old stuff. This is the first day of the tracking poll available here:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/elections/2004/charting.html

It's fluctuated since then and now stands at 50-46.

Five points is huge. That is a big enough lead where I would feel very comfortable that we would win even in the face of massive RAT cheating.

My guess is we are not truly up by five yet, but this is very encouraging. With another strong debate, we could be there by next week in many of the polls.

If we keep working hard, and assume it will be very close, we will triumph.

We are now to the point where the general poll numbers are meaningless, except for the President's approval rating. State-by-state for the electoral map are the only ones worth watching.

Secondly, I'm still amazed that the MSM, even Fox, didn't see what a rout Friday night's debate was. If nothing else, W. energized his base, which is more than Kerry ever did. It didn't take a genius to figure out that Bush was hitting them out of the park from the first question, and the pundits and erudite talking heads are wrong, wrong, wrong.

Fox News, even Fred, is really not getting it about how the rest of America is seeing this race. They better get with it or they are going to lose their own loyal viewers.
