GMA Downplays Afghan Electoral Success; Condi vs. Cleaning Lady; Kerry's Terrorism Weakness
Good Morning America - ABC (Sunday Edition)

Posted on 10/10/2004 5:46:57 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

Done in by a magic marker? GMA did its best this morning to undermine the significance of yesterday's Afghan elections. Condi and The Cleaning Lady (AKA Madeleine Albright) traded blows, and Stephie and a GMA host took some surprising shots at Kerry's weakness on terrorism.

First up was an interview with Condi Rice. GMA's Kate Snow immediately went on the attack, trying to disparage the Bush administration and the electoral success in Afghanistan:

"The administration has been touting the Afghan elections, and Pres. Bush talks about it all the time on the campaign trail, but yesterday accusations of fraud arose. Are you troubled?"

Condi: "It was a great day for Aghanistan, the people exceeded expectations, people stood in the snow to vote. The UN has said they don't think elections were tainted, there will be an investigation, but these were technical difficulties. This shouldn't be allowed to obscure the great success."

Snow dutifully hewed to the Kerry party line: "Regarding these 'technical difficulties,' could Kerry have a point when he says the Bush administration has taken its eye off the ball in Afghanistan?"

Condi: "No. There are technical difficulties even in mature democracies. People need to understand that the war against terror has multiple fronts, not just in Afghanistan. We have killed or captured 75% of Al-Qaeda's leadership."

Then it was on to an interview with Kerry foreign policy advisor Madeleine 'Hotel/Motel/Holiday Inn' Albright, the voluminous bags under her eyes packed with anti-W ammo.

Leading the "Blame America First" brigade, she disparaged Condi's claim about killing or capturing most of Al-Qaeda's leadership, decrying that "we don't know how many terrorists we've created."

lbrighthe claimed that we did indeed take our eye off the ball in Afghanistan with an "unnecessary" war in Iraq. Great hindsight, Maddy. You supported the war when it began. You can leave now. Oh, and as always, don't forget to leave a mint on the pillow.

Interestingly, both Maddy and George Stephanopolous, who followed, were hit with this incredible statement from Kerry appearing in today's NY Times, in which he equates terrorism with domestic crime:

Kerry: "We have to get back to the place we were, where terrorists are not the focus of our lives, but they're a nuisance. As a former law-enforcement person, I know we're never going to end prostitution. We're never going to end illegal gambling. But we're going to reduce it, organized crime, to a level where it isn't on the rise. It isn't threatening people's lives every day, and fundamentally, it's something that you continue to fight, but it's not threatening the fabric of your life.''

George Stephanopolous was asked: "Kerry seemed to link prostitution and organized crime with terrorism. Could that come back to bite him?"

Steph conceded it could, as W's campaign would use it to show "he's weak on terrorism, doesn't get it, and is a liberal."

GMA: "46% of Kerry supporters support him because they're angry at Bush. Is that dangerous for Kerry?"

Steph: "Anger is a great motivation, but Bush has something like love from his base. This is something W will reinforce in last few weeks with issues like taxes and tort reform to keep the base energized."

Kerry's "terrorism=prostitution=organized crime" comments could become the focus of the campaign for the next week. Note how the sycophantic NY Times reporter tries to spin it to Kerry's advanatage in the quote below. But I expect that W will soon saying something like this: "maybe Sen. Kerry is unfamiliar with Thomas Jefferson, who said 'the price of freedom is eternal vigilance.' If Kerry thinks terrorism will go away like prostitutes in Times Square, he obviously doesn't have the determination it takes in these dangerous times."

Anyhow, here's the quote from the Kerry suck-up NY Times reporter:

"This analogy struck me as remarkable, if only because it seemed to throw down a big orange marker between Kerry's philosophy and the president's. Kerry, a former prosecutor, was suggesting that the war, if one could call it that, was, if not winnable, then at least controllable. If mobsters could be chased into the back rooms of seedy clubs, then so, too, could terrorists be sent scurrying for their lives into remote caves where they wouldn't harm us.

"Bush had continually cast himself as the optimist in the race, asserting that he alone saw the liberating potential of American might, and yet his dark vision of unending war suddenly seemed far less hopeful than Kerry's notion that all of this horror -- planes flying into buildings, anxiety about suicide bombers and chemicals in the subway -- could somehow be made to recede until it was barely in our thoughts."

Kerry really equated terrorism to organized crime? I can't believe he is equating the two. Obviously, they're trying to downplay the importance of eliminating terrorism because they know that's where they're the weakest.

Somehow I don't think most of the families of the 3,000 dead would agree with that assessment (excepting of course, the "Jersey girls").

Do you have any idea what Kerry's record was as a prosecutor? Is it as stellar as his record as a Senator? /sarcasm

I absolutely, fervently hope this is used by President Bush in every remaining venue he has before the election.

I don't have details about Kerry's record as prosecutor, but when he talks about it he tends to portray himself as a champion of abused women. I'm surprised, now that you mention it, that W's campaign hasn't focused more on Kerry's record as Dukakis' Lt. Governor. He must be on the record supporting all sorts of loonly liberal programs, like weekend passes for violent felons, etc.

I guess he doesn't realize that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have done just that to Osama and his boys. Except, of course, for the ones who have either chosen to operate in easier countries or elected to go toe-to-toe with US forces in Iraq.

...."we have to get back to where terrorists are not the focus of our lives, just a nuisance."...

Does this mean that JfnK has Flippered on his position "We will win the War on Terror"? I recall when Bush said that we will never end terrorism completely, Kerry and his crew made a big stink about it, as if we were capitulating.

Oh boy, Meet the Press is about to start. I think I should go for a run now. I will be healthier for it and I won't need to buy a new TV afterwards....

As a former law-enforcement person, I know we're never going to end prostitution.

"But that doesn't mean a fellow, particularly one with a much-older wife with a mouth on her like a union longshoreman, can't have a little fun when he goes to Vegas."

Bush and our armed forces in Afghanistan have had more effect on bringing freedom from abuse to women than Kerry ever could claim.

MTP and Edwards-

We need NATO in Afghanistan. There are still many problems with the election.

Russert: War in Iraq is diversion from war in Afghanistan. Edwards: Correct.

What that statement means = We cannot win the war on cterrorism, in fact, we made need to 'legalize' some forms of terrorism.

We had no plan to win the peace in Iraq.

Same ol', same ol'

I heard all this nonsense on the debate this week. It's still wrong.
