Oct. 9, 2004 — KABUL (Reuters) - Poll stations officially closed in Afghanistan's historic presidential election on Saturday with no reports of any major attacks by Taliban militants who had vowed to sabotage the process.

The stations closed at 4 p.m. but people already in line will be allowed to vote, officials said.

The election has been jolted by a boycott of 15 of the 18 candidates in the fray, who alleged irregularities in the conduct of the poll. Election authorities said the complaints did not justify halting the voting.

Follow the same principle that will be followed in Iraq. If a district is too full of risks from terrorists, then that district does not participate in the election and all who support them get left out of the process. Similarly, in Afghanistan, candidates who boycot the election have effectively conceded their own election to the opposition. After all, how can you vote for someone who refuses to run.

There must not be any AFL-CIO goons residing in Afghanistan.

This, added to the Aussie result, is a very good thing for all the administration efforts.

When Ireland was partitioned in 1922, Catholic politicians boycotted the political process as a "protest" What they accomplished was Protestant control and a missing 'official' Catholic voice for two entire generations.

Boycott = abdication.

To quote a famous gentleman who first planted the flag of liberty on a forsaken landscape:

Now why couldn't the DemonRATs follow the example of the 15, since they're complaining about the tactics they invented and use? :-)
