Louis Rukeyser Pulls Plug on Long-Running Financial Show The Associated Press Published: Oct 8, 2004

NEW YORK (AP) - Veteran financial journalist Louis Rukeyser, who has been off television for a year due to cancer, has asked CNBC to pull the plug on his long-running Friday night business news show. CNBC said that "Louis Rukeyser's Wall Street," which has been airing with Consuelo Mack as substitute host, will cease production by the end of the year.

Rukeyser, 71, had announced earlier this year that he had cancer in his lower back and said Friday that complications had developed.

"I can no longer predict when I will be ready to rejoin you here," Rukeyser said.

Rukeyser lasted 32 years on the show, which started long before business news became popular. Most of that time it was on PBS, before the network fired him in 2002 in an attempt to update its format.

Angered by the move, Rukeyser shifted to CNBC and - to get back at his former employers - arranged to have his new show also aired on PBS stations. It was being shown on 162 PBS stations, a CNBC spokeswoman said.

He last appeared on his show in October 2003.

I enjoyed his show...my father-in-law made a great deal of money following his advice.

Sad to see he's on his way out, but why not give Consuelo a permanent slot and continue the show?

A good and sensible man with a sly wit. Plus he looks like George Washington. All the best to him.

I am guessing that it is Rukeyser's intent here to step out of the way for Consuelo or whoever to take over their own show.

They'll never find better hair than Lou's.

This is sad - they finally stopped the substitutes taking over when his recovery was held over far longer than expected and it became clear there was a problem.

Mr. Rukeyser was the ABC news correspondent in London, at Scotland Yard, who reported on the capture of James Earl Ray, the man who was charged with killing Martin Luther King.

I had wondered what had happened to him. My dad died at 90 several years ago. I recall sitting with him watching the show. It is a loss for all of us.

His puns were so bad they were actually funny. I loved his PBS show and the intro music in 5/4, if IIRC...

I saw LR speak live in Akron Ohio back in the late 1970s.
I was surprised because he gave a talk with very little investment advice and a whole lotta conservative politics.
He ripped on Jimmuh Carter bigtime.
I've been watching his show since the mid 70s.
Godspeed Louis, you are a fine man and a great American.

Mr. Rukeyser was able to combine wit, entertainment and information in a way like no other. A real class act.

Prayers sent for his health.

A sad loss to television - a bit of civility and class in an otherwise pretty bleak landscape - I started watching way back in the '70's - a fine way to unwind after a long work week was to sit back on Friday night and enjoy Louis and his colorful and usually informative guests - with my scotch in hand and my three thousand dollars in my mutual fund, I reveled in the world of high finance with them and felt for a half-hour like a real Master of the Universe - unfortunately the only advice from the show that I ever followed - Frank Capiello (sp?) urging everyone to hold on to Ballys because it was going to go way up - lost me a couple of thou when I finally sold a few years later. But since the mutual fund was Magellan and eventually was worth over a hundred thou, things didn't turn out too badly....

Better health and God speed, Louis.....
