Michael Moore off hook for underwear gimmick

Michigan prosecutors won't bring charges against filmmaker Michael Moore who state Republicans say broke the law when he offered new underwear and food to young people who promised to vote in the presidential election.

On Tuesday, the Michigan GOP asked prosecutors in counties where Moore had spoken to bring charges against him. State law prohibits offering something of value in exchange for agreeing to vote.

"It's ironic that Republicans have no problem with allowing assault weapons out on our streets, yet they don't want to put clean underwear in the hands of our slacker youth," Moore said, according to the Associated Press. "The Republicans seem more interested in locking me up for trying to encourage people to participate in our democracy than locking up bin Laden for his attacks on our democracy."

According to AP, prosecutors in Isabella, Ingham and Antrim counties said they determined no action was warranted. A spokeswoman for Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said today that election law violations should be handled by the attorney general's office.

"Alleging that a person is attempting to buy votes is a serious allegation, and one that is taken seriously by this office. However, your request to prosecute Mr. Moore trivializes the intent of this section of the election code," wrote Antrim County's Charles Koop in a letter to Greg McNeilly, executive director of the Michigan Republican Party.

Isabella County's Larry Burdick said he chooses "to devote our resources to prosecuting those who are delivering cocaine to our young people rather than underwear," AP reported.

Moore is touring the company and urging young people he calls "slackers" to vote.

The prosecutors have spoken: It's OK to bribe people into the voting booth for your candidate. The precedent is set. Instead of spending money just on advertising, the GOP should send Ben Stein or some other wacky celebrity out on the stump with cool, hard CA$H.

Careful though, there's still going to be a double standard in place. If I tried to give out tighty-whities to college boys to vote then I'd be locked up in jail, but only because I'm a Bush supporter.

The precedent being set is, if you are (in)famous and liberal, THEN you can bribe people to vote.

*** What a strange statement. I think buying votes is as serious as drug selling.

Nah, I doubt it. As soon as it becomes unpopular to be a loud-mouth FREAKING IDIOT he will probably reregister to vote as a republican and decide to be conservative.

Some people will whine and moan about WHOEVER is in office. He probably doesn't even really want Kerry to win, because if Kerry does win then Moore will have to flip-flop and be a Kerry hater to get the attention his family never gave him.

So, if someone were to offer free hunting licenses at a gun club in turn for voting in November, I assume all would be OK?

Here's how to handle Michael da 'Moor'.

Invite him to the White House for dinner.
Proceed to have him debrief you about his movie and ask him, in the interest of national security and under penalty of perjury, to explain where and when he got all that (inaccurate) information and show exactly where and how those inaccuracies compromised our nation--not in the short term, but long-term. Perhaps even da Moor himself would be horrified to the extent of which he has been used by people he thought were friends.

President Bush has made an art of turning former enemies into friends, or at the very least allies. Michael Moore might just be surprised to find that the man he hates so much isn't who he thinks he is.

Turn your enemy into a friend and he will no longer hurt you.

Michigan republicans are being disenfranchised!

Call the voter fraud hotline: 1 800 OUR VOTE (Let them know you are being disenfranchised; they surely are willing to support anyone who is being disenfranchised, not just Dems.)

Anyone want to guess at what Michael Moore's Slacker Tour slogan is to motivate them to vote for Kerry?

"Pick nose! Pick butt! Pick Kerry."

I kid you not... www.michaelmoore.com

Told a leftie who spams me with MM stuff that they really should put that on a bumper sticker ;-)

Those must be democratic prosecutors. If the boat were on the other dock, repubs would fill the jail. Selective law enforcemet at it's best. Those prosecutors should resign immediately for they cannot apply the law equally in this case. Michael Mooore would make a good super bowl blimp, but it might explode due to his fat rate. If this doesn't show why we need common sense judges and courts nothing does. Any Kerry appointees would make the courts a circus that would pale all we see today.

I think Michael Moore should start attending Iraqi weddings...

I'm from Michigan. MM sickens me...it's bad enough that he's going around to college campuses "speaking", but now this.

There are just no words to express how much I despise this man and what he's trying to do to my generation.

As much as I despise Michael Moore, I think the GOP comes across as petty by trying to make hay out of a petty promotion gimmick like this. We've got much bigger voter fraud fish to fry, and if we cry wolf on this, we'll get less attention regarding actual, massive and intentional vote fraud.

That just means he's off the legal hook, not off the moral or political hook. Of course since this is Michael Moore we are speaking of, if it was a real, rather than allegorical, hook, he'd be hanging by his hindquarters, perhaps in a large smoker.
