Cheney's fading credibility (Thomas Oliphant/Boston Globe Agitprop)

Cheney's fading credibility

By Thomas Oliphant, Globe Columnist  |  October 7, 2004

THE BIG moment, like so many Dick Cheney moments in recent years, turned out to be a flat-out falsehood.

From the audience, I could sense that after a poor, defensive start, the once-steady and reassuring vice president, who threw his credibility into the trash can during the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, was building to a memorized zinger from his Wyoming practice sessions because he was using uncharacteristically political language and completely dodging the issue presented in the debate's ninth question - about the endless Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

After John Edwards had demonstrated his command of the issue in his own response, Cheney responded by attacking, of all things, Edwards's attendance record in the Senate, reciting his handlers' catchy name for him, Senator Gone, and then, after a dramatic pause, concluding: ''The first time I ever met you was when you walked on the stage tonight.''

Despite the desires by some Democrats for a Halliburton festival in the debate, Edwards brought it up only twice, each time as a counter-attack. And each time he displayed the attention to detail that used to characterize Cheney until he took office.

Tommy congratulates him for only bringing up a complete falsehood twice? How about a congratulations for only punching your wife in the stomach or a hearty pat on the back for snorting heroin instead of shooting it?

Perhaps Tommy would like to check out Edward's falsehood of Bush bringing back the draft.

By the way, is it just me or does Thomas Oliphant look like the sterotypical pedophile?

I always thought he and Pee Wee Herman were a tag team in movie houses.

Doesn't Oliphant's wife work for CBS? She works for one of the networks.

Just like a Lib to miss the point completely. The point Cheney was making is in no way diminished by the fact that they may have had some passing interactions in social contexts. The point was not whether they had ever met, but that they had never met on the senate floor. Leave it to libs to try to confuse the situation.

Wonder if The Boston Globe and the DNC have a 50/50 salary deal on Oliphant, or does Tommy get his annual performance evaluations directly from the DNC's HR department? ;-)

He really does. No foolin'.

The funny thing about most newspaper columnists is that if you met them in person and they offered their opinion, you would think: "who is this socially retarded geek and why does he think I care what he says?"

Yet put the same losers in newsprint and voila! we're suddenly supposed to care.

Of course, Edwards was completely unable to contradict Cheney at the time, which speaks volumes for home much of an impression the "meetings" made on either man.

My own hunch is that it was a trap, and Edwards later walked into it, squeaking "I sat next to him at breakfast once", like it was some little man recounting his brush with the famous and powerful. Any Edwards response only diminishes his own stature, though Mr. "Listen about my big pool drain cover case" Edwards didn't catch on...

"Mr. Oliphant lives in Washington with his wife, CBS correspondent Susan Spencer, when they are not growing hay on their farm near Sperryville, Va."

Both making six figures, no doubt... ;-)

Thanks...I was pretty sure that she worked for CBS....so his wife works for CBS and his daughter is a speech writer for the DNC...he writes for the Boston Globe ...I guess we don't need to know much more.

Edwards cited more specific, and verifiable concerns. One of them happened to be the fact that nearly half the $20 billion portion of the bill targeted for ''reconstruction'' was a $7.5 billion, no-bid contract for Halliburton.

How is 7.5 almost half of 20?

"Oliphant's fading credibility"
By orangelobster

If Oliphant's main problem is that Cheney forgot that he met Edwards at a rubber chicken dinner then he is whistling in the dark. I think most people find it entirely believeable that meeting Edwards is an event easily forgettable. Yeah, Cheney probably did meet him a few times, but he probably meets dozens of overbearing salesman types with toothy grins and firm handshakes in the course of a day. Cheney probably just smiles, nods, quickly forgets them and moves on to worrying about the job of running the country.

The Boston Globe is one of the BIGGEST liberal rags in the nation, cannot be trusted to tell the truth. Boston has two newspapers The Boston Globe and The Boston Herald, the Globe is trash and the Herald is almost as bad.
