Take heart in the fact that President Ronald Reagan, before he saw the light, was a Democrat, before he repented of it.

That's funny...I took it as a veiled threat at worst and territorial cliquishness at best. =D My bad.

Welcome Cindy. I had been a Democrat all my life, and my large family remains strongly Democrat because, well because "Republicans are just evil and stupid", thats why...

I slowly came to my senses over a period of several years. I generally preferRepublicans, but I consider myself a conservative first, with a streak of libertarianism.

Anyways, welcome to the club! As you've found out, most of us are neither evil, or stupid, although some of us may be insane. Have fun!

My aunt calls herself a "yellow dog Democrat". She's been poor all her life and thinks the Dems are for "her". I figure, if the Democrats are so helpful when it comes to poverty, why is she still poor? She always tells me I'm too poor to be a Republican, but I tell her I'm Republican because I AM poor.....and I want my darn money back.

Blessings to you and welcome to FR.

Welcome to FR! Happy that you really discovered who you were and saw the light! I myself never bought what my parents told me, always felt more conservative and have been a registered Republican since my 18th birthday. We love converts!

Now comes the hard part, prepare to be branded and ostracized by all of your friends, some family, coworkers, etc...

Also prepare to have your car paint keyed if you dare display a Bush/Cheney sticker.

You could also lose your job for displaying a picture of the President.

And you will be called a Nazi and/or Fascist

"...my mom always said "The Democrats are for the poor people, and the Republicans are for the rich..."

That's what my Mom told me, too. Which is precisely why she was a Republican. As am I.

It would be counterproductive, so I won't do it, but I've thought about getting some bumper stickers made, saying: "I support tax cuts for the rich... and I vote."

I'm another Democrat turned Republican, but back during President Reagan's term.

My nephew switched when he was 17. His parents went through the ceiling. The whole time he was growing up they gave him unisex toys for Christmas - feminist awareness and all that crap. And lots of liberal indoctrination. Now, he's 19, in college, and Republican. Making great grades, solid values, and backing Bush. Youthful rebellions working for us? Who woulda thunk it?

His parents must be sick. There is nothing worse to avowed liberals than a relative moving to the "dark" side. They would probably have been happier if he would have turned out to be a gay drug abusing, child molesting, zoophile, alcoholic homeless bum.

The Democrats are for the poor people, and the Republicans are for the rich

This view of politics died with John F. Kennedy.

Ask your mother who the 10 richest democrats in the US Congress are (9 of them are democrats). Ask your mother who is richer, Bush or Kerry (Kerry's wife is many dozens of times richer than Bush).

The poor want their kids educated in decent schools, but the democrats favor the teacher's union over the interests of the poor - so they continue to block school vouchers.

Kerry wants to raise the taxes for those who earn over $200K/year. But this includes many many small businesses (shops, stores, etc) that file their corporate taxes in the form of a personal income tax. These businesses represent the primary means of employment for the poor. Businesses that pay more taxes cannot afford more employees or even the employees that they already have. The poor, who already don't pay taxes, will lose employment. In essence this will make the poor even poorer, but more dependent on government.

Republicans believe that government should provide tools and opportunities for the poor to help themselves achieve a more comfortable standard of living. Democrats believe that the role of government is to redistribute wealth directly. By handing out "candy", the democrats keep the poor - poor, making them dependent on government "candy", which keeps the poor voting for democrats.

Don't be embarrassed about the word "democrate." You have just created a new word that will spread around our community and generate both thought and laughter. That's a GOOD thing. Congratulations.

Welcome sweetie!

9/11 was my last straw too.
I was almost there, but it kicked me over the line.

PS, ignore the grumps ;)

Ditto to that. Cynical is good, what with all the trolls we've had in the past few weeks.

Are you "cindy68507" because you've already been thrown off FR as "cindy1 - cindy68506"? ;)

Is this a democrate?:

Welcome. You will probably find that many of us were (D) when we were young.

Maturing and taking on responsibility is usually what turns one into an (R).

Maturing also brings on an attitude of conservation, another component of being considered a Republican.

Most people are (D) because someone told them they were, Most (R)'s are that because they CHOSE TO BE.

Welcome Cindy!

Some ways to figure out if you're at the right place:

If you love America and aren't afraid to show it, you're probably right at home here.

If you love and pray for the men and women who are giving up their lives and enduring heart-rending pain fighting for your freedom, you're probably right at home here.

If you think that "working people" are everyday working American's instead of just union members, you're probably right at home here.

If you think that life trumps the choice to end life, you're probably right at home here.

If you feel more comfortable supporting a wholesome institution like the Boy Scouts over the rights of "gays", you're probably right at home here.

If you would rather have the means to defend yourself than depend on someone who doesnt really have your interests at heart, then you're probably right at home here.

If you're aghast at the murder of 44 million aborted babies, then you're probably right at home here.

If you believe in personal integrity instead of "Character Doesn't Count," then you're probably right at home here.

If you believe in a strong US Foreign Policy instead of being more "sensitive" to terrorism, then you're probably right at home here.

If you're interested in making this great country less dependent on foreign sources of oil instead of protecting land that even animals wont live in, then you're probably right at home here.

If you'd rather be an AMERICAN than an ANTI-AMERICAN, then you're probably right at home here.

I could go on, but I'm sure you get the message :)

Godspeed and God Bless!

A-R
