Ah, we all knew it already, it wasn't a secret. But bringing it up was a low blow from a low blowhard.

Now you noticied?

Why do you think his wife is so large?

She stays around for the bankroll.

The pretty pony is a classless fool. He also snuck a cheat peak at Cheney's note pad when they first sat down. Did anyone else notice?

He had to restrain himself to keep the pinky from extending while he sipped from his cup.

I notice a lot of people on this thread are saying that it was common knowledge. This shows a lack of awareness as to the general ignorance of the public concerning our political leaders. I'm guessing it was the first time that a lot of the viewers had heard it. And even though I had heard it, I was shocked that Edwards mentioned it.

I think it probably sat wrong with some of the viewers.

"Pandering to the gay vote, you know."

And stumbled all over himself trying to explain Kerry's position. No class.

Cheney handled it superbly. It was wildly and almost criminally inappropriate---certainly a huge error of judgment on Edwards' part, a mistake that a Clinton would never have made. It went beyond an ad hominem attack. It was, in fact, a vicious, personal attack intended to undermine the relationship between Mr. Cheney and his daughter.

Her status has NOTHING whatsoever to do with the issues at hand in this debate. Edwards can attack Cheney's policies on any grounds whatsoever. He has no business discussing Mr. Cheney's daughter in this (inter)national forum. It reminds me of the attacks on Mr. Gibson's father during the making of the Passion.

If they don't know, they're ignorant, because it's common knowledge. Anyone paying any attention would have noted that weeks ago when Cheney took a stance on gay marriage that was not in line with Bush. He mentioned his daughter, etc. She's gay, but is held below the radar so as not to freak out those who think that the ills of society are the fault of gay and lesbians everywhere. God forbid there should be gay "marriage."

Doesn't matter that she's "out".

It was well beyond the bounds of decency and decorum for an event like this. It showed Johnny-boy Edwards has all the manners of the unkempt porcine.

I really suspect he did this to SUPPRESS the Religious Right voter from coming to the polls for Bush/Cheney on election day. If he did it innocently he's even less responsible than his preening, giggling, goofing and gaffes suggested.

My father's probably rolling over in his grave at this fellow representing North Carolina.

Yeah, it might actually HELP with "independent voters."

It appears Edwards was attempting to compare Cheney's truth telling about his daughter's sexual orientation to Cheney's mixed messages about Iraq and Al-Qaida.

Ha, ha.....funny how Edwards is a shyster lawyer.

Not funny if you're trying to find an obstetrician and there are none left in the area, because they've been driven out of the field by phony birth injury claims of the sort Edwards specialized in.

You know to me, it's the draft dodgers that look bad, not the guys who defend the little guys in court.

You misspelled 'exploited people's personal tragedies to amass tens of millions of dollars by suing blameless doctors for what happened'. Hope this helps. Funny how you brought up Bill Clinton, though. Two slick-talking, Southern shyster lawyers. Funny how the Dems drag these creatures up from the murky depths of the sewage lagoon and run them for national office.

This was my thought, too. He brought it up so deliberately that I thought it had been planned to suppress the fundamentalist Christian vote. That Cheney has a gay daughter might be well known and known for some time among many people, but I guarantee their were people hearing it for the first time last night. That was the whole point and it was cynical and mean.

She's been out for some time .. it's no secret

But I sure did like how Edwards said he THINKS the Cheney's loves their daughter

Edwards showed what a prick he is with that comment

It's already been int he news quite extensively. At an event a few weeks ago, VP Cheney mentioned his daughter being a lesbian.

Cheney response was so classy.

Yup. He ceded 90 seconds of airtime, like it was nothing. Contrast that with Edwards taking advantage of Ifill's mistake to grab at an extra 30 seconds.

More debate folo: Alert reader S.H. clues me in on the obvious purpose of Edwards' creepy 'congratulations on your gay daughter' ploy: it was "a very thinly disguised way of letting Reagan Democrats (and other conservative-leaning members of the electorate) know that Cheney has a lesbian daughter." In other words, a cynical, premeditated appeal to prejudice. You can say it's an appeal to prejudice that's justly deserved, because it turns the Republicans' bigotry against them. But that assumes opposition to gay marriage is now the same thing as general prejudice against gays. Edwards was playing to the latter, uglier sentiment. It's still creepy. ... Just his cold confidence that he could pull the trick off without seeming evil (indeed, while pretending to be friendly) is creepy. ...

****

The Mickster is dead-on.

Of course there were millions who before last night didn't know Cheney's daughter is gay. Now they do. Edwards/Kerry/McAuliffe/Carville/Begala calculate that they'll pick up some bigot votes or as noted elsewhere on this post, suppress the pro-Bush fundamentalist vote. I don't think so, but that doesn't change the fact that the tactic is in the top 5 sleaziest stunts I have seen in 40-plus years of following politics.

I think he lost more votes than he gained. A lot of people who heard it for the first time were bound to have been revulsed by the fact that Edwards brought it up. It was unnecessary.
