Kerry dismisses criticism of 'global test' remark as 'pathetic'

HAMPTON, New Hampshire (CNN) -- Sen. John Kerry on Monday lambasted as "pathetic" scaremongering, Republican criticism of his comments during last Thursday's debate in which he said the president's decision to go to war should pass a "global test" of legitimacy.

Asked during a town hall meeting in Hampton to explain what he meant, the Massachusetts senator said, "It's almost sad; it's certainly pathetic, because all they can do is grab a little phrase and try to play a game and scare Americans."

"And if they were honest enough to give America the full quote, which America heard, they would know that I'm never going to allow America's security to be outsourced. That's the job of the president.

LET us look at the full quote from the Debate Transcript :

"LEHRER: New question. Two minutes, Senator Kerry.

What is your position on the whole concept of preemptive war?

KERRY: The president always has the right, and always has had the right, for preemptive strike. That was a great doctrine throughout the Cold War. And it was always one of the things we argued about with respect to arms control.

No president, through all of American history, has ever ceded, and nor would I, the right to preempt in any way necessary to protect the United States of America.

But if and when you do it, Jim, you have to do it in a way that passes the test, that passes the global test where your countrymen, your people understand fully why you're doing what you're doing and you can prove to the world that you did it for legitimate reasons. "

=========

This means, to any English speaking person, that all the promises in the first two paragraphs are CONDITIONAL on fulfilling the condition in the last paragraph. i.e. the global test and "proving it to the world". So if he can't convince the world, that we should preemptively attack say Iran or Syria, he will just sit here and let us be nuked.

FEARMONGERING: Look for Edwards to say this about Cheney in the debate tomorrow also. That is the execuse the leftists are using right now for everything Cheney or Bush says about terrorists.

If President Bush doesn't come bounding out on that stage full of energy and more like the Bush I've seen on the campaign trail, I'm gonna scream.

...they would know that I'm never going to allow America's security to be outsourced. That's the job of the president.

You mean, it's the job of the President to outsource America's security, or it's the job of the President to never outsource America's security?

I sense a flip-flip coming on...

For all the bashing his supporters did on Bush for saying "you forgot about Poland" Kerry's campaign is built around him saying "You forgot about France" to the president.

He's the pathetic one.

This was my favorite part.

"...I was talking about was a test of legitimacy, not just in the globe, but elsewhere.

Elsewhere? ELSEWHERE? Where elsewhere? Like... little green men elsewhere?

Ahh!! I get it!

When he said "foreign leaders" wanted him to win... we all just *assumed* he meant earthly leaders. Silly us.

Bush's ad is 100% correct.

Watch the ad here:

Bush-Cheney '04 Launches New Television Advertisement: "Global Test"

ARLINGTON, VA -- Today, Bush-Cheney '04 announced the release of the campaign's newest television advertisement, "Global Test." The ad contrasts the Kerry doctrine that America must pass a 'global test' before defending itself with President Bush's belief that decisions about defending America should be made in the Oval Office, not in foreign capitals. "Global Test" will rotate in on national cable and in select local markets Monday. Satellite downlink coordinates will follow later this afternoon.

Script For "Global Test"

Voice Over:
He said he'd attack terrorists who threaten America,
But at the debate, John Kerry said America must pass a "global test" before we protect ourselves.

The Kerry doctrine: A global test.
So we must seek permission from foreign governments before protecting America?
A global test?
So America will be forced to wait while threats gather?
President Bush believes decisions about protecting America should be made in the Oval Office, not foreign capitals.

President Bush:
I’m George W Bush and I approve this message.

And more detail about the background here:

http://www.georgewbush.com/news/Read.aspx?ID=3721

including this, where Kerry finds Bush's preemption against terrorist organizations "troubling":

In 2003 Boston Globe Guest Commentary, Kerry Denounced "The Threat Of Military Preemption Against Terrorist Organizations." "It is troubling that this administration’s approach to the menace of loose nuclear materials is long on rhetoric but short on execution. It relies unwisely on the threat of military preemption against terrorist organizations, which can be defeated if they are found but will not be deterred by our military might." (John Kerry, Op-Ed, "Moscow Treaty Is Full Of Holes," The Boston Globe, 3/5/03)

This is just more evidence that Kerry actually lost the debate. People just wont realize it for weeks or months.

Which candidate has been defending remarks made in the debate since Friday?

Kerry.

Which candidate contradicted himslf during the debate?

Kerry.

Which candidate took multiple postions during the debate to try to avoid alienating 1/3 of his base?

Kerry.

Kerry lost big time on substance. The only criticism democrats and the media have against bush is that he made faces and wasn't mean enough. You decide what's more important.

You mean, it's the job of the President to outsource America's security, or it's the job of the President to never outsource America's security?

What do you want it to mean? ;-)

Oh my! Look at who is on the defensive about the debate.

Why would a winner get so defensive?
