Optimistic Bush can win here, RNC gives $150,000 to get out vote
Sensing an opportunity to win New Jersey for President Bush on Nov. 2, the chairman of the Republican National Committee stopped in Trenton yesterday and handed state GOP leaders $150,000 in campaign cash to help fund get-out-the-vote efforts.
RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie also announced Vice President Dick Cheney will visit the state in the next couple of weeks, although an exact date and location have yet to be set.
He pointed to upcoming appearances by Rudolph Giuliani and Laura Bush as other evidence that the national party is now making a stab at New Jersey's 15 electoral votes. Giuliani, the former New York mayor, is to lead a Bush-Cheney rally today at Ramsey High School. The first lady, who appeared at a rally in Hamilton last month, is scheduled to return for a fund-raiser at former Gov. Christie Whitman's home on Oct. 18.
"An opportunity has presented itself and we are going to capitalize on it," Gillespie said at a Statehouse press conference. "We did not budget for New Jersey to be a targeted state, so we had to shift some resources."
Sen. Joseph Kyrillos (R-Monmouth), the Republican state chairman, said the money and big-name appearances show that "New Jersey has become the newest battleground state in the presidential race."
But Sen. John Adler (D-Camden), co-chairman of the Kerry-Edwards campaign in New Jersey, dismissed the GOP announcement as a campaign tactic.
"They're hoping that by paying a little bit of attention to New Jersey without committing real money, Democrats will shift their attention away from swing states," Adler said, insisting that New Jersey is not one of them. Adler called $150,000 "an insignificant amount for campaign purposes."

Bush 2004!
Schundler 2005!
Might want to wait for the debates and new polls, money and time might be needed in Ohio, NH, WV or other places
Looks like Forrester wants the Governor's job now.
On another thread, you said watch where resources go. In light of the same, thought you'd like to see this thread....
Hudson County: Bush Country?
Prez pulls slightly ahead of Kerry in Dem stronghold
If Bush wins New Jersey, there's no point in counting the votes on the West Coast. It's over.
Forrester is shelling out the Ca$h! Didn't he pay for the anti-Rather add on CBS during the evening news?
I'll take Forrester or the Mayor of Bogata too!
Whoo Hoo it is a fight in NJ.
I still think Bush should do a one day tour of California.
Yes he did. Considering how the NJ Supreme Court hosed him in 2002, I hope Forrester spend LOTS of his money helping Bush. Turning the state around for Bush would be Forrester's ultimate revenge.
Okay... what's with this? Is New Jersey really about to swing to the President?
I used to agree 100%, but now I'm not convinced -- NJ is clearly diverging from the trend and might deliver electoral votes for Bush even if we're losing one or more swing states.
Why?
New Jersey is on board with the "War on Terror" more than anyone else -- NJ sends far more people to work in NYC, and lost far more people on 9/11, proportionately than NY State did. Moreover, New Jersey has done better in the economy, and worries more about Kerry tax increases, than most of the "swing states."
good question; you'd think listening to "some" on FR that today would have seen the RNC pouring resources into Kentucky, Georgia and South Carolina.
Is New Jersey a stretch this early? I don't think in the grand scheme that 150K is that big a move but it's definitely a move. I guess we'll know for sure if W shows up in NJ some time next week AND Kerry counters with a visit.
I adore Bret Shundler!
He's RIGHT on everything ... from my perspective.
Pre-Debate, yes. Now? However, I think it will come back to being close again shortly especially with most people feeling the President is "better at fighting terrorism".
The Associated Press :10-4-2004
HACKENSACK -- U.S. Sen. John Kerry jumped to an 8 percentage-point lead following his first debate with President George Bush, but more people believe the president is better at fighting terrorism, according to a new poll.
Fifty percent of likely voters surveyed said they planned to vote for Kerry, the Democratic nominee, while 42 percent said they planned to vote for Bush, according to The Sunday Record of Bergen County. Independent Ralph Nader would earn 2 percent of the vote, while 6 percent of those polled said they were undecided, the newspaper reported.
The telephone poll of 502 likely voters was conducted Friday by Research 2000 of Rockville, Md. The survey has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
I am from NJ, and I think that a good portion of hard working New Jersians are sick of the Dems! It's nothing but scandal after scandal, tax after tax. Plus it comes down to if you don't live in Newark or Trenton, the big guys don't want to hear from you. I'd LOVE to see the whole state of NJ swing Republican....
(I'd like to think all my poking and prodding of my fellow NJ voters who are fence sitters is helping...)
He's definitely got cash.
I suspect that this is the real reason Corzine is helping that teacher who put up Pres. Bush's picture in her classroom.
