Lakewood, N.J. -- Nine dogs, four cats, a stuffed unicorn and a pink stuffed pony all received the blessing of St, Francis during a rite yesterday at All Saints Espiscopal Church marking the feast day of the patron saint of animals.
The Rev. Richard C. Wrede administered the blessing to the menagerie assembled at the Route 9 church, where he is pastor.
Some owner sought a little extra help with the healing of pets. Others brought their animals, real and imaginary, to keep them in good spirits.
Lorna Drexler, 5, and her 9-year old brother Maxwell, came to the parish to bless their best friends. Maxwell's dog Onya sat well behaved for his blessing.
"Uni and Pluto," Lorna told Wrede so he could bless her stuffed unicorn and pony.
Only cats and dogs came this year, but "in past years we have had hamsters, iguanas and birds," Wrede said.

This is wrong on so many levels...
Finally -- there's hope for all sock puppets and gerbils who have yet to be "blessed."

Our church did this on Sunday. Absolutely silly but harmless.

"Absolutely silly but harmless."The what's the use?

Used to be a really big deal years back.. you'd bring your milk cow or your chickens and get the blessing.
Some people think it helps.
Makes people feel good, as far as I 'm concerned, no one is being hurt, so no harm, no.....fowl.

I go to the blessing of the pets every year.
It's fun.
And, I think prayer for such an important part of my family is a good thing, personally.

It's an evangelism tool. Rather like a dinner at the church.

I go to the blessing of the pets every year. We had the blessing for the first time this year at our Catholic parish. About 75 dogs, some cats, gerbils, parakeets, one parrot, a couple of ferrets, and two rabbits.
A good time was had by all, with rottweilers romping with daschunds.

No harm; no foul. So what if a priest blesses a little kid's stuffed animals? Where's the harm?

And hopefully, no funny looking puppies will be the result!

And why exactly is this wrong? The Orthodox
Book of Needs has prayers for blessing vineyards, fruit, nuts, flesh-meats, eggs, cheese, any object, animals, among other things. In fact, for a few years at least, in the town where our Mission's mother parish is located, despite the fact that we don't venerate Francis of Assisi, the group that organized a town-wide animal blessing liked the prayer from the
Book of Needs so well that they kept inviting our priest to officiate.
Is there something wrong with realizing that Christ's saving work, in destroying the power of death renews all creation?

We also have our pets blessed, as you know. Even our livestock. Though never at church. In our case the priest must come to the home, and as he blesses our homes, he can also bless our pets...barn, whatever.

Except for the pink stuffed pony, which was probably made by a bunch of godless Commies in China.

That was bad!
My wife took the cats to a local church for blessings when we lived in Illinois. I don't think the blessings took, though.

Anyone have a jpeg of the Pets.com sock puppet? Poor guy's career went down the toilet --- he could use a blessing.
I'm l for the blsing of my pets. Jack Russell Terriers need all the help they can get.
