What part of 'gay' don't they understand? (lesbian angry that men like watching her kiss girlfriend)
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | October 5, 2004 | Nadine Davidoff

Posted on 10/04/2004 7:31:17 AM PDT by dead

Nadine Davidoff has had enough of men assuming that what gay women really want is a bloke.

When you see two girls walking down the street arm in arm there are a few of safe assumptions you could make about the scene; either the girls are friends or they are gay - they could even be partners. However, a certain subset of heterosexual men inexplicably arrive at a completely different conclusion: that the girls are putting on this display for their benefit and that they secretly want the men to join in the fun.

Who knows where this misconception comes from? Centuries of male privilege perhaps; a notion that everything in this world is created for their enjoyment? But this is the post-feminist age and men have long since ceased to be our supreme rulers. Which poses the question: what part of the word "gay" do these men not understand?

We are not helped, of course, by the likes of Madonna and Britney Spears, who recently engaged in a tongue-twister for precisely the purpose of revving up heterosexual men. I am sure they enjoyed themselves (well, Britney surely did) but did they realise that this wanton publicity stunt trivialises and misrepresents every genuine display of affection between lesbian women?

A case in point; one warm Sunday afternoon, I was walking along Bondi Beach hand-in-hand with my girlfriend. Deep in conversation, we suddenly became aware of a fat, hairy man barrelling towards us with his arms outstretched. "How 'bout a threesome ladies?" he leered as he attempted to enfold us in a group hug. It didn't take us very long to come up with an appropriate response to this invasion, and we promptly told the fool to bugger off. But sometimes, it's a little bit more tricky.

For example, my girlfriend dropped me off at yoga one evening, and as we parted, she gave me a quick kiss goodbye. "Nice kiss, girls," drawled a male member of the class as he stepped into the room. As I followed him into a quiet candlelit studio with members of the class already deep into their postures, it didn't seem quite right to ruin the serenity with a loud four-letter word.

It does help though, to have your mother on hand. Strolling past Ravesi's in Bondi one hot afternoon (yes, hand-in-hand with my girl) the hairy boofheads spilling out of every open window could not contain their excitement, and proceeded to hassle us with catcalls and whistles. By now, quite used to this graceless display, we walked blithely on. Not so my mother, for whom this was a new experience. "What's wrong with you all?" she scolded as she turned to face them. "They're not doing it for your benefit."

I have never seen a bunch of men sink faster into their beers. Clearly, if there's one thing heterosexual men are still afraid of, it's their mothers.

"Ditto vice versa, though. Assertive Husband and submissive wife. She's miserable and he doesn't respect her. Either way it's wrong. Difference is that HE may have the final say on some matters (SOME matters). However, if HE makes HER feel submissive, at least in MY house, HE is history.
"

Bingo!

Bad example.

I take it you've never seen film of lions mating. Lioness' fiercely snarling and snapping, her neck firmly held in the jaws of the much heavier more powerful male. Yeah, she said 'yes' alrighty.

"Males get turned on by watching two women. Pornography bears me out."

Yes, it does. But not all males are "turned on" by watching two women. Not all males view pornography. Not all males do any particular behavior.

Bottom line is that some males are "turned on" by a hole in a fence.

While rape has a high level of success in passing on one's genes

Rape is not a good strategy for passing on one's genes. Since the rapist is unlikely to stick around to take care of the resulting child, that child (especially in a primitive society) is less likely to survive.

I have, indeed, seen such film. Actually, the common house cat has the same behavior. Perhaps you've never seen a female house cat reject a male? It ain't pretty.

Do not mistake mating behavior with anger. As I said before, female lions make their selection by joining the pride. When they are in heat, they accept the dominant male, and reject all others.

Feline mating behavior is pretty well-understood, but you do have to examine it before discussing it, if you plan to make a point.

I think it was kind of a phase for most of them, but still was kinda hot.

Lesbian Until Graduation. Not an uncommon thing. It allows women to have a sexual relationship while avoiding all the potentially negative effects (pregnancy, STDS) of being involved with a guy.

I kind of agree with Dennis Leary- if I ever have daughters, I really wouldn't have a problem with them being lesbians in high school and college.

I don't know. What possible phenomena can occur that can be called unnatural? 'Natural' is as meaningless as 'organic.'

I agree, but it depends on how the term "natural" is used. If "natural" means only that something occurs in nature, then anything that occurs in nature is, I guess, natural.

Look at the arguments suggesting that rape can be viewed as natural. Isn't that what is being suggested - that rape is natural because it occurs in nature? Are there any other arguments being made in support of rape? I don't think so. I think that natural is just being used here in a descriptive sense that would include anything that happens in nature.

And, in that sense, it is also natural for other people to kill, castrate and/or imprison folks who attempt to use rape as a strategy - because that is what we do with such folks. ;-)

Actually, it's a common phenomenon. I remember reading an article about them - and they are called LUGS - lesbian until graduation.

I did and it makes your first point about 'the natural order of females making the choice' absurd.

As someone who graduated from a Seven Sisters College, I've seen that happen more than a few times.

Actually, I think it tends to happen for 1 of 2 reasons -- either from an urge to "experiment" in order to be "cool," or from being hurt one time too many by doltish college boys and being addicted to being in a "relationship."

And for the degenerates who are typing with one hand: NO, like the overwhelming majority of people I knew there, I never swung that way.

This thread has gone off in strange directions.

I just wanted to celebrate how exciting it is to see hot angry young Australian lesbians, made all the more enjoyable by the fact that your enjoyment is further enraging them.

It's like a perpetual-motion machine of joy!

Would you be just as excited if they look more like Janet Reno and Donna Shalala than a couple of lipstick lesbians? ;D
