*HOUSTON SPCA RECEIVES HURRICANE VICTIMS EVACUATED FROM GRAND CAYMAN ISLAND *

The Houston SPCA sent representatives to meet a Cayman Airways Flight on Saturday, October 2, 2004. This was the first of several flights that will carry more than 200 innocent animal victims of Hurricane Ivan to safety at the Houston SPCA and Citizens for Animal Protection.

Patricia Mercer, Houston SPCA President, said, "Acceptance of the Cayman Island refugee animals is another example of how the Houston SPCA is dedicated to helping all animals in disasters. Receiving these 200 dogs and cats will bring the total we have saved from this year's hurricanes to almost 500. We were glad to answer the call for help, sending half of the food in our shelter down to feed the animals before their journey here.

why would I have a problem with an animal organization helping dogs?

Because human beings are suffering where they are saving animals.

It's more that a little troubling that beasts get resuced out of a situation where humans are suffering and dying.

Get this in your head: The SPCA flies in and loads up 200 animals, while thousands of humans are left behind on that flight.

Just wrong, stupid, and perhaps, ultimately evil. If, the bottom line is that a cat's or dog's life is as valuable as a human's.

If the Red Cross or the UN or any other humanitarian agency isn't doing enough for the people of Haiti, then they should be criticized. I'm not particularly in favor of evacuating all their citizens to Houston, though.

The Caymans are a different matter. The people there, while suffering great devastation, are not wading in excrement.

I appreciate your concern that not enough is being done for the people of the other islands. But I think it is commendable that an animal organization is doing something for animals.

This sort of stuff is just nuts...We all love animals and hate to see them suffer but in a disaster take care of the people.

Beside my point.

Do you not see the lunacy, and potential of evil, in equating cats and dogs with human beings when it comes to saving lives? Dogs and cats while humans are dying?

Any Houston area freepers looking for a furbaby?

What? Houston got a shortage of animals to adopt? Now, you have to immigrate them?

No it isn't beside the point. You are bitching that other people aren't supporting the "right" cause.... and yet, you seem to have supported no cause at all.

And no... I absolutely do not see it as evil for people to spend their money any way that pleases them.

Last year I donated two cars to the Placer Co. SPCA...we have 4 cats all from the shelter and two with special needs. I bring that up to try to make a point, if my house is on fire I'll get my kids first and then go back for the fur-babies.

You know nothing about what causes I support. You might want to knock that off - personal and whatnot.

What you refuse to engage is the parity that this animal airlift exploit means. Humans suffering and dying, while well intentioned Americans dump recources into cats and dogs.

A man is less worthy of the jet fuel that a dog. Because, you had to leave humans behind when you flew all the beasts out.

That's a fine way to behave if your house is on fire. This guy seems to think you shouldn't spend another dollar on those cats until all the human suffering in the world has been paid for. I think he's got no right to tell anyone which causes to support, and he's got no moral high horse unless he has actually donated to help the causes he thinks are so much more worthy than this one.

For the record - I have a good old 10 year old dog we adopted from the pound; and two cats. Ben found the Mama under a bush after getting hit by a car. Had her eye knocked out. Cost me $200 to patch her up. One of her babies we kept, also got run over; another couple hundred off that.

Dog has been fairly low cost.

It's not about giving animals a home, and enjoying them.

It's about airlifting them from a disaster area where humans are in need. Just wrong

So questioning folks allocating resources to animals in preference to humans is a "moral high horse?"

No wonder Roe v Wade rules.

Just wrong, stupid, and perhaps, ultimately evil. If, the bottom line is that a cat's or dog's life is as valuable as a human's.

Nothing wrong or evil about it.

The same thing was done in Florida. Houston took in nearly 200 animals from Pensacola and Tampa.

And, the adoptable animals will not be euthanized, if they are like the Dallas SPCA, which keeps the animals until they are adopted.

Different strokes for different folks, don-o. If you want to send a check to the Haitian Relief Fund, I know they'd accept it.

If you want to take a Haitian family into your home, I'm sure the government could arrange it for you.

As for those who might want to adopt a Cayman dog, they'll have the opportunity to do that.

Why do you feel it necessary to restrict where people exercise their charity?

Spend multi thousands to bring cats and dogs to Houston for adoption, (prolly, ultimate euthanasia) while Hatians, Dominicans, and other human beings are wading around in shi* and dead bodies?

Do you write angry letters to the Ford Motor Company when your refrigerator stops running?
