Here are the specific frames from the debate video shoqing most clearly what Kerry had in his hand as he took it out of his pocket and placed it on the podium.
I have taken two of the frames, lightened them, zoomed in, and sharpened the pics. No other enhancements have been made:
Cropped, lightened original of Kerry pulling item from pocket.
Enlarged and sharpened.
Cropped, lightened original, of Kerry putting article down.
Enlarged and sharpened.

yeah, but ... don't the debate hosts' provide them pen and paper at the podium? If I were a president or senator, the last thing I would think of is "ooops, better bring a pen and paper". The handlers would be doing that.

Jeez, do they use the same podiums over again? Was Gore doing this last time?

I was convinced later during the debate that he rotated note cards during a response.
I spent all day Friday trying to find the clip. I saw it on FOX news during the debate, but it did not show up on the CSPAN angles.

"Bush is in a loose/loose situation in debates. Kerry will lie, steal, cheat and swindle. Bush will not."
I agree with what you said about Kerry and Bush. However, now this is headlined in Drudge and being shown on Fox (though I don't know in what context), Kerry is constrained in the next two debates. He can't do what he did again because of all these eagle eyes now watching him. There could be more back camera footage taken. He can't assume he can hide anything any more.

If he brought anything
tangible to the debate with him, he knowingly violated the rules...that's cheating.
It's just the nature of the cheat that's in question now.

And I'm with another FReeper who was wondering about the high edges on the sides of those podiums. I'm wondering if the President noticed Kerry with notes
It might give more explanation of why he was so annoyed

This is my position, Orion.
It doesn't matter one whit WHAT he brought with him.
Bringing any paper or pen in addition to what he requested to be placed at the podium by the debate folks was AGAINST THE RULES.
Clear as a bell against the rules. Did he cheat? Probably, but it may have just been a blank notecard. It STILL VIOLATED THE RULES.

Bush diod not get his rear handed to him. He was beat on the style and scholastic measurements of debate skills perhaps...but on issues and on substance, his answers were much more specific and full of detail (IMHO) than Kerry's.
...and I think the people will see it. Sort of like the syaing of this last week...we're electing a President and Comander in Chief, not a debater.

You think asking the President if Kerry had the "character" to be President was a fair question??
