NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

Why in the world would anyone decide who to vote for based on stage performances versus record as the POTUS and CIC? Am I missing something - are you voting for a lawyer, a salesman or a President?

I was listening to Bob Brinker on "Money Talk" today. Someone called and was bashing Bush on his tax cuts to the "rich". Bob Brinker, who is a mild manner guy, blew up and explained those tax cut was to stimulate the economy. The plan behind it was to have those people take their tax cuts & go out & spend it thus stimulating the economy.

It was a simple response , but very effective. I just don't P. Bush doing that. I see conservative radio talk show host explainiing what he ment or adding to what he said to help explain, but I don't see Bush or the Republicans doing that very well.

I am voting for Bush, but like I said before I will be very surprised if he wins.

LOL

Posters who maintain that George W. Bush is "just like his Dad" are indeed ...

"The Weakest Link".

It's lefty fare. The 200 plus folks signing on FR daily is not automaically good! :^)

Never have I said I didn't have faith in Bush. My problem is the he blew this debate so bad that it might have very well caused irreversible damage. I saw a post here and it was the truth. Basically saying you only get one chance at a first impression and Bush's first impression was blown and people might not take a second look.

Now Bush has to debate in an arena that is not his best in an area that's not his best. And since he doesn't seem to really think fast on his feet he may be in bigger trouble in the second debate.

And Cheney's debate with Edwards isn't going to help. Remember in 1992 Quayle(sp) won his debate with Gore but that didn't help Bush 41.

You got it buddy! Bush works for us, we don't work for him. I expect him to go out there kick kerry in the butt in the next 2 debates! This mickey mouse gracious stuff is only going to allow this goon from Massachusetts to stomp all over him with the help of the media wing of the Demonrat Pary. I know Bush is a great and a good man but many Americans are too clueless to realize it. (Ever listen to Sean Hannity's man-in-the-street interviews?) A good part of this country gets its values off of Oprah.

I see that you are willing to toss out three and half years of demonstrated leadership for one night's so-so performance and some missed opportunities. There simply isn't THAT much weight on last Thursday night. Or frankly, any or all of these debates put together.

If you haven't been on the main thread in a while other polls are showing unchanged opinions and even a small increase for Bush.

I don't put all my eggs in one basket. W has a lot more going for him than a debate with a slicked down used car salesman. Shoot, I voted for Gore in 2000. Ouch! who threw that rock at my head?

"Among the three-quarters (74 percent) of registered voters who say they watched at least some of Thursday’s debate, 61 percent see Kerry as the clear winner, 19 percent pick Bush as the victor and 16 percent call it a draw."

Why would it be shocking to anyone that the public is capable of choosing style over substance ? After all, they twice elected Bill Clinton.

Sheeeezzzz, these slick bastard types sure lead a charmed life. When is the public going to wake up? I don't know if our Country can survive another one of these a$$holes.

Horse hockey! It's the height of absurdity to think that this President after nearly 4 years in office and the given the circumstances he's dealt with is providing any first impressions to anybody in this country.

Unless they've been living on the plant Zarga, FGS!

Bush has been POTUS and CIC for over three of the most dramatic and important years in this nation's existence. Anyone who relied on this silly faux-"Debate" for a first look at him is so out of it there's no point in concerning ourselves with them.

I know what you are saying, but John Kerry has NONE of the charisma of Bill Clinton.

This guy is Dukakis unlikeabilty meeting Jimbo Carter sissyness.

Yeah you guys are right, I need to relax.....Yes I am basically new here and I feel like i'm being accused of being a troll without directly being accused of it, but I just flipped out when I went to Drudge and the first thing I see is this in his really big lettering...
NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
and yes I pushed the panic button, but I feel like I had to let it out! All i've been hearing all day is Springsteen and The Dipie Chicks I was ready to go bananas! But I did panic and i'm glad this is the place I came too because you all gave me some perspective and hopefully I'll stay as calm and collective as all of you, but it's hard! But for now I do feel much better! On the bright side this election still isn't as bad for me as 2000, that one almost killed me! lol!! Thanks
