NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

If you haven't noticed, watch how inappropriate his touchy feely hands are around other women and I am not talking about his wife.

Politics aside, he would cause me squirm away.

The more they lay siege to the board to say Bush screwed us all with his features, the more desperation I smell. LOL

We're supposed to be sucking our thumbs, not calling them on their agenda and refuting it.

This is the best way to pound trolls. They can't handle logic and refusal to bend to MSM spin.

"The one thing that really bothered me was Bush didn't ACT presidential; the facial expressions were a big turn-off to women and swing voters. I was a bit aggravated with it too !!"

LOL "ACT presidential" well he is the President so I guess he was ACTING Presidentially irritated. And about facial expressions being a "big turn-off" hmmm I am a woman and I wasn't particularly turned off. I didn't dwell on that.
It was the content and I have listened to Kerry for years twist truths and offer out as fact basically LIES. No panic here either. Right will win the day!!

You can call me anything you like. . But don't call me a Kerry supporter! I'd vote for Che Guevera, Fidel Castro, and Karl Marx before I'd vote for this elitist windsurfing wonk from the gay state!!

Well, I'm dug in for the duration. I've had enough of the bed-wetting fear mongering going on.

They have their torches lit, but where are they marching?

Frankenstein is surely dead... or is he?

But like the picture ... 'specially since I spent 3 freaking hours on the live thread Thursday and only recovered after going to the Great State Fair of Texas today.

When someome tells you something, believe them, i.e., Evan Thomas, the Managing Editor of Newsweek stating the MSM preference for Kerry adds on 15 points. Now we begin to see it manifested in this curiously timed and interestingly broken-down poll after a cleverly set-up "bounce" for Bush and, luckily for Newsweek and the rest of the usual suspects, Kerry's better-than-expected performance in the debates.

Also, a couple days ago, Mike Murphy predicted the MSM would a) declare Kerry the winner; b)produce polls that would show tightening and c) keep attention on a renewed horse race. There's probably nothing Bush could have done to avert this short of turning into Ronald Reagan or Winston Churchill, but he did miss a couple of gimmees. Anyway, this is developing as many smart people thought it would.

Then why are you so negative? It ain't all that earth shattering. It was a lousy debate. And a lefty rag put out a story. You all run around like a chicken with it's head cut off. It ain't that bad. Stop pulling out your hair and wringing your hands.

They're just marching around in a big circle, lashing out at anything that moves.

Sure, you always run like you are behind. But there is danger in unwarranted panic. Many on this thread seem ready to throw in the towel or to throw Rove over the side. Yeah, Bush probably lost the debate - at least on style - but it has not turned the race on its head as suggested by this Newsweek poll. The massive change in representation of Republicans and Democrats in the poll participants since the last poll is enough to discount any trend shown in this poll since the last one. This poll is not an accurate representation of the race. It is a poll rushed to press and based on a very short sample period and methodology different from previous Newsweek polls. They wanted to break the story of the big Kerry comeback (or create it) so they cheated. Wait and see the polls that come out using constant sample times and methodology (though I would argue Rasmussen has already done that and shown there was no detectable shift in this race).

Run like you are behind, but don't run in a blind panic.

You're a Freeper whom I respect greatly and the crestfallen nature of your "take" on that little puppy unt pony show eludes me completely.

What is it you wanted him to do? The man is in complete control of his gig.

Bush is a Fedor level fighter. Let's enjoy a master craftsman and a lionheart at work.

I have a scientific poll for you. And this one is scientific.

If you discount the fact that it was in Texas, and at the Fair ... and a number of people were drinking beer.

Anyway, there was one of those lifesized cutouts of Bush and also one of Kerry that you could take your picture with.

I took one of my daughter with Bush and then questioned the guy at the booth about preferences.

He said 30 people had taken pics with Bush and zero with Kerry.

So, relax everyone.
