Staffers at the Kerry campaign may want to put the cork back in their champagne bottles after they examine the internal numbers in the latest Gallup poll.
Sure, most felt that the Massachusetts Democrat was the better debater by a whopping margin of 53 to 37 percent.
Kerry did even better when Gallup asked which candidate expressed himself clearly, beating Bush 60 to 32 percent.
But when asked which of the two was more believable, it was Bush over Kerry - 50 to 45 percent.
On which candidate did better on the issues, again it was Bush over Kerry, 49 to 46 percent.
Those surveyed by Gallup also apparently didn't buy the media's line that the president came off as irritated and petulant. Asked who was more likable, it was Bush over Kerry again, 48 to 41 percent.
But the worst news for team Kerry came when Gallup asked which candidate was tough enough to be president, a question that taps into concerns that Kerry may be weak on terror.
Gallup respondents gave the "tough enough" award to Bush - and by a landslide, 54 to 37 percent.
I got stunned Friday when I polled my high school students regarding the debate. They said that Kerry was a better debater, but that they thought that Bush is a better/stronger/clearer leader - by a 9 to 1 margin. I've been teaching for 11 years and teens tend to be liberal - but they are also quite honest and good at spotting phonies. Again - I was stunned!
Great, lets hope the parents vote for Bush.
Thanks for being a teacher, especially a conservative teacher.
Newsweek is reporting different results.
This will continue to be an issue until and unless GWB kicks ass in the next two...he really did not do a good job on the first debate.
Yea, it's pathetic when they spin Kerry's likability numbers as going up up up, while still several points behind Bush who was not in top form and came off as tired and irritated at times during the debate. What would that number have been if Bush were in tip top shape?
Yeah - it can be a bit "lonely." I always get a good laugh when lefty teachers find out that I'm a conservative - AFTER they've grown to like me. Without exception, they say "But...you seem like such a nice person!" Does not compute!!! Does not compute!!! BOOOOM!!!
There's a NewsTweak and ARG poll today showing the race close. I am a bit concerned, but first off--Reagan lost his first re-election debate, too. Second, I was at Bush's appearance in Cuyahoga Falls, OH today and it was great! I couldn't see a damn thing, but I heard W and it was great! Third, the next debate is a "town hall" format, and Bush does better at these.
(Have faith in W; debates 2 & 3 are going to open a lot of eyes.)
I'm looking forward to the tuesday night match up between Cheney and Edwards. This should be a real standup fight.Cheney is more eloquent than "W" and has an unmatched command of the issues,Edwards is also an excellant speaker and may beat Cheney on likeability. It should be real fun to watch.
Glad to meet you too!

A 25 year old friend of mine - a 9/11 convert to conservatism - was having a recent political discussion with her uncle. He, a conservative, was stunned to learn that she was conservative too - "But, but, you have pink hair," he said, referring to some streaks she had put in her hair. Love it.
Me too
Hey wait a minute. Carl Cameron says the Kerry folks are excited about the "dramatic increase" in Kerry's likability numbers.
Source for that supposed number? Even the highly suspect Pro Kerry Newsweek pool shows Kerry's unlikablity number at the same place.
Sure but it is NEWSWEEK. Funny how the "poll" just exactly matches why Elanor Cliff wanted it to say. I wonder why that is? So who do we belive Newsweek or CNN/Gallup?
Kerry's been debating since high school and has developed the skill to elevate him to the rank of Masterdebater ;-)
Thanks for that hopeful anecdote about your students.
He is a smarmy little know it all who has never done a useful thing in his life and it shows. He is exactly what you would expect in a liberal trial lawyer.
who is the, oh what do you call them, the person asking the questions. Man my mind is bland tonight.
