"The Global Test phrase will come to haunt Kerry."

Exactly. I didn't even catch it when Kerry first said it, since Kerry's words started to swirl around in my brain in a random droning monotony. I kept asking my husband to help me refocus on Kerry's point, but he seemed to be drifting away, too.

Then Bush said something like, "I don't know what he means when he sys he'd protect out country if it passes the global test." That sure woke me up!

Words like "global test," combined with certain photos in Paris, could make a great Swifties ad.

Its a snap poll for gods sakes it means nothing wait for a few days and see how they come out

A snap poll would be an indicator of first impressions among voters-don't look for the numbers to change dramatically in the next few days

My big regret is that I did not watch the debate but came to FR for running commentary.

When I watched the re run of the debate I was VERY impressed with the President and saw Kerry as trying to pander to the UN.

Not exactly where the citizens of this great country are right now.

"He had to stand there & listen to lie after lie."

I think that was the problem.

"Bush lost a election pole by a huge margin on a CONSERVATIVE CHRISTIAN website"

Yeah, and I suspect that last night there were a lot of "new Freepers;" they were the ones on the live thread saying, "Bush is tanking" etc. It got to be depressing, and I'm sure that was their purpose.

does he ever wash that thing? LOL, my husband has been wearing one for longer than sKerry. He showers with it on. It's plastic. I haven't sniffed it to see whether it's absorbing odors. I'll do that and let you know.

Bush was tired. It seriously was past his bedtime. Good news and bad news both from Iraq.... time in Fl spent talking with and comforting the H victims, while Kerry was getting a manicure.

Bush was tired and he was not looking nice.
Next time he needs to look relaxed and ask some tough questions like:

"Senator, you say you support the troops and will protect them, but do you still renounce you country and think all troops are baby killers and rapist as you said in 1971 before the Congress, let me quote "Cut off ears, cut off hands.."

I couldn't bear to watch. Did Kerry appear flustered or was he at all times composed?

They both had the questions. Kerry has had much more time to prepare, what with not having to run the country and all. He even had time for a manicure yesterday while W was out talking to hurricane victims.

Then I'm glad I missed the live thread. I didn't even watch the debates but came here this morning to get the views. Mixed reviews so far and few feel inspired.

I thought Bush looked rather pitiful. But the problem might not have been insufficient coaching or prep; it might have been too much preparation. Prepping too hard before an event can burn you out.

"Style and nimbleness" as a result of having far more time to be coached and preened. For God's sake, the man had time to get a spray on tan, play touch football and continue to get manicures.

I agree. Although I will certainly vote for President Bush, those on the fence could not have been swayed by last nights performance. The president seemed flustered and anoyed by Kerry and may have seemed smug.

"Kerry was better stylistically". Uh, from hanging out with elitist snobs?

Yes, this focus on "style" sounds like we're auditioning someone for a role in a movie. Get serious, people.

Here it is again: "Kerry LOOKED light a better fighter". Uh, it's not about looking good (also known as "stylin'"), it's about being a formidable CIC.

I actually think in a sense he might have been a little overcoached. He had a very solid and effective message, got some great zingers on Kerry, but he needed a broader script, more points, more defense against the predicatable lies.

He seemed to be more in the mode he was in last spring when Russert interviewed the President, and he hemmed and hawed while making good responses. Unfortunately, the hems and haws are remembered as much as the message.
