KERRY CLAIMS HE'S "NEVER, EVER" USED WORD "LYING" IN REFERENCE TO PRESIDENT BUSH ON IRAQ.
JIM LEHRER: "New question, Senator Kerry. Two minutes. You've repeatedly accused President Bush, not here tonight but elsewhere before, of not telling the truth about Iraq. Essentially, of lying to the American people about Iraq. Give us some examples of what you consider to be his not telling the truth."
SEN. KERRY: "Well, I've never, ever used the harshest word as you just did." (Sen. John Kerry, First Presidential Debate, Miami, FL, 9/30/04)
BUT IN DECEMBER 2003, KERRY TOLD NEW HAMPSHIRE EDITORIAL BOARD BUSH "LIED" ABOUT REASON FOR GOING TO WAR IN IRAQ. "Kerry also told a New Hampshire newspaper editorial board Friday that Bush had 'lied' about his reasons for going to war in Iraq, a word Kerry has been reluctant to use publicly for months. Yesterday he said he did not plan to use the word again." (Patrick Healy, "Kerry Camp Lowers N.H. Expectations Behind In Polls, Senator Now Seeks Spot In 'Top Two,'" The Boston Globe, 12/8/03)
AND IN SEPTEMBER 2003, KERRY SAID BUSH ADMINISTRATION "LIED" AND "MISLED." "This administration has lied to us. They have misled us. And they have broken their promises to us. The president promised to the people and the Congress that he would build an international coalition, respect the United Nations' process and only go to war as a last resort. I will tell you that from my war fighting experience, I believe there is a test for a president as to how you go to war. And that test is whether or not you can look in the eyes of parents and say to them, 'I did everything possible to avoid the loss of your son and daughter, but we had no other choice in order to protect the security of our nation,' and I know this president fails that test in Iraq." (Sen. John Kerry, Campaign Event, Claremont, NH, 9/20/03)
Concur and I think it was five... references...
Swifties need to get on message hard now.. As this pompous fart tries to use the war he defamed to support his politics...
You are entirely correct IMO. This debate goes to Bush in the only category that matters: who wins the election. I only remember a couple of things about the debate, though I watched intently. Kerry fired a continual barrage of crap that was literally too much to correct. Bush stayed on point. Bush has belief in being consistent and steady, which he demonstrated by almost ignoring Kerry and driving home his basic points. Three days from now, the people who love Kerry will still love him. But the independents will have forgotten any nuanced views and will remember their gut feelings, which the polls have already confirmed. Thus, they will vote with who they are comfortable with as a strong leader, if they bother to vote at all.
Add to this million undecideds who are going to listen to Rush tomorrow, "even though they don't agree with him", and Kerry is toast for the same reasons he already was going into the debate. He's an idiot; people inherently distrust inconsistent people, and Bush delivered the message twenty times that a person who calls it the wrong war at the wrong place and the wrong time can't lead the nation during that war.
Bush's knockout happened, but Kerry won't be on the mat until election night.
Well... His lips were moving.
They are going to release some video spots of the president's facial expressions....
Guess that's the best they can do!
Anyone have a link for sKerry's suggestion we give them nuke tech (Iran)? I know its out there ... ;-)
That is really a great description of the situation....
Well there's a no *****er....
I hope Bush can sometime articulate that having lots of terrorists try to attack us in Iraq presents challenges, but also opportunities; it is certainly better than having them attack us here.
I think that GW and his team decided to let Kerry just go for it during the first 2/3's.
The Republicans have fact checkers vetting every answer, response and utterance that Kerry made tonight.
We will see many of those answers, responses, and utternances in hard hitting ads for our side.
This will set the stage for debates 2 and 3. If Kerry repeats himself re bad answers, responses and utterances in debate #2, he will have defeated himself with his own mouth. Kerry's responses will become great ads for GW.
EXCELLENT POST by FReeper Porterville
on what actually happened in the 1st debate!

Never stopped them before...
Actually Germany decared war on us first after Pearl Harbor but Saddam had been firing on us in the no fly zone in Iraq and had not adhered to the cease fire agreements...It did not cooperate fully with the UN inspecectors,or heed the UN Resolutions.
no sh*t!
I guess kerry was saying that was OK!!!
Maybe there are some security reasons why Bush is not articulating some of this, hard to tell. Or maybe there are some surprises to come and he doesn't want to show his hand. But, personally, I think he's been weak in explaining his case. There is a lot of ammunition he could use.
Indeed, Kerry may be cornered. If he repeats his lie, Bush can challenge it with the truth. If he speaks truth but contradicts his earlier statement, Bush can question him about the earlier statement.
"WHY WOULD ANYONE SUGGEST WE ELIMINATE ANY WEAPON SYSTEM(NUCLEAR OR OTHERWISE) WHILE WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A WAR AND OUR TROOPS ARE IN HARM'S WAY? "
Even worse - he said "why is it okay for US to have nuclear weapons but its not okay for North Korea to have them". (Or something to that affect).
This guy is the typical Liberal. The sad part is that many will agree with him.
Rove, Kerry analysts and GW's team told GW to just hang back in the first 2/3's of the debate and let Kerry say anything that he wanted to say. They probably knew that Kerry had gotten a preview of the questions before hand.
So Kerry was loaded for bear and spewed and spewed.
This was why GW look so poed while he listened to Kerry spew lies and other mantras.
Now those lies and mantras will hammer Skerry until the next debate. If he does the same tactic in the second and third debate, his mouth in the debates will have destroyed him.
