This debate isn't going to "cost" the president at all.Kerry is coming off like the lying moron he is

All these refs to Viet Nam aren't going to play well in the battleground states. Kerry sounds like a pompous, second-guessing, benefit-of-hindsight ass.

We're still going to win this thing.

John Kerry would activate two active tooty forces. Perhaps they would be the Ben & Jerry's Tooty Fruitty army?

Those of you saying that Bush is losing don't understand that unless Kerry decimates Bush - he loses. He's doing well, but Bush is doing fine.

Kerry wants 2 more divisions? Will he need a draft to meet that?

The one question Lehrer asked Bush to criticize Kerry on was worded to make Bush look mean if he attacked Kerry. Lehrer asked if he believed if Kerry won, we would be more likely to get hit. He should have asked if Bush believed that Kerry's polices were less safe, which is how he sets of Kerry to criticize Bush.

6PPC WROTE: "Yup...every question is slanted to give Kerry a springboard for criticism." It was clear to me that Kerry got the questions ahead of time when Kerry said something to the effect of "we'll get to homeland security in a later question."

Maybe this why the President looks angry? he knows this was a setup? It would sure make me mad.

Why this constant need to run down Bush? This constant negativity is NOT a sign of intellectual ability, it is a sign of ignorence.

I really wish people would not forget Ronald Reagan's Eleventh Commandant:

"Never criticize another Republican."

My wife who is apolitical, is watching this. She thinks kerry is tanking, Bush sounds more real.

BTW she is already decided to vote for Bush.

Bush is doing fine.

The problem is Kerry is spewing certain lies that are taking Bush off his game, and he is stumbling around a bit. This may be his weakest debate performance to date.

The same old tired rhetoric from Kerry. Nothing is new. Bush misled us. I tired of watching this and am watching a ball game.

Kerry is relying on one statement: I can do better.

Look everyone, Kerry is a smooth snake-oil salesman. There is no knockout punch tonight from either side, and this will be the headline. Everyone knows that Bush is more substance than style.

"Reach out to the Muslim world! I can't beleive Kerry said that."

I can believe he said that. He always wants to talk to America's enemies, he's reliving Viet Nam and his Paris trip.

Kerry's lies about North Korea are going to pull him down. Kerry wants it both ways, as usual.

The President says: bilateral talks break up the six party talks. Iran already has sanctions against it.

Lud! Kerry's going to commit us to war in Africa?

President knocked one out with "it wasn't my administration that put sanctions on Iran!

Kerry is drowning in his own nuance stats and names. Also speeding through his comments.

Exactly and since you wrote that it has become clear Bush is hammering this duplicitous hypocrite. He has him in an enormous and irresolvable contradiction and Kerry can't yammer his way out of it.

Thank you Chris.

And by the way, why do many of the doom-n-gloomers on this thread have names that this Free Republic veteran of six years have never seen before?

Could Moby be at work here?

This debate is about TERRORISM and Foreign policy..

Bush has a huge edge on those issues.....people who are voting based on terrorism have already decided to vote for Bush...so even if Kerry is creaming Bush, (which I dont agree with)....he isnt gonna make a huge dent in the polls

PS- Bush sucked in the first debate with Gore too, then really hit his stride in the second 2 debates....I think this first debate is a feeling-out process for Bush to learn what to expect from Kerry in the susbequent debates

Gore was for sure more annoying.

HERE COMES W----COME ON PRESIDENT BUSH!! he is starting to calm down, hit his stride and rock it. I wish he had doen this from the beginning.

There is no question that if you read the transcript, W is winning- if you watched it on TV, kerry has won the first part.
