TRAPPE, Md. — John Eisenhower, son of Republican President Eisenhower (search), said in a newspaper column this week that he will vote for Democratic Sen. John Kerry (search) for president on Nov. 2.

In a rare public announcement, Eisenhower said he switched his party affiliation from Republican to independent after 50 years after losing confidence in his former party. He said Kerry has demonstrated courage, competence and a concern for tackling the "widening socio-economic gap in this country."

"There are times when we must break with the past, and I believe this is one of them," Eisenhower wrote in the opinion column published Tuesday in The Union Leader of Manchester, N.H.

The column assails President Bush and the GOP for federal budget deficits, for "unilaterally" invading Iraq and for infringing on personal liberties.

The Bush campaign had no immediate comment.

Eisenhower says in the article that the republican party used to stand for fiscal responsibility, therefore he is voting for Kerry.

This is another vote "against Bush" rather than "for Kerry."

This is kind of ironic, when you consider that some of the current problems in the Middle East can really be laid at the feet of the Eisenhower administration.

Note to Eisenhower, the country cared what your father thought. It does not care what you think. Something to keep in mind going forward.

You could have Donald Duck on the Dem ticket and he'd still get a ton of votes because this is an election of popularity for a sitting president, as all incumbents will have to face. The people voting for Kerry hate the fact that he's an imbicel, but it's the lesser of two evils in their eyes.

Well I guess being 'fiscally responsible' really would have helped those victims of 9/11,,right?

Where are this guy's priorities?

And he thinks the Democrats are more fiscally conservative than Bush? me thinks he has sipped to long on a wine bottle. I guess I would rather stand by Zell Miller than Eisenhower in a fight. He sounds like a pacifist.

Soon there will be reports that the mother of a woman that worked for Nixon, knew a guy that watched a TV show with a person on it that said she heard that Bob Hope's grand daughter was voting for Kerry.
