LANSING, Mich. (AP) A high school student convicted of lying to police when she claimed she was sexually assaulted by her special-education teacher has been sentenced to 30 days at Ingham County Youth Center.
Rebecca Shong, 17, was found guilty in August of filing a false police report in the commission of a felony. She also was ordered Wednesay to complete a residential program, the Lansing State Journal reported.
"We were expecting a sentence kind of like what was given," said her defense attorney David Zoglio. "My client feels that she can certainly do this program and is optimistic about her future."
Leslie High School special education teacher Craig Fry was charged in January with three counts of sexual abuse, but prosecutors dropped the charges after police said the girl lied. Fry, 50, died June 26 from complications related to a heart attack.
legal ping
I agree 100%
"As far as I'm concerned, those who falsely accuse people of major crimes deserve the same sentences someone convicted would get."
Good idea!
That has been my position for a long time as well.
Special ed teacher?
Was she special ed too?
If she was then maybe I have some compassion but if she's not then she is scum and deserves this and more
Yes, it broke.
"...Craig Fry was charged in January with three counts of sexual abuse, but prosecutors dropped the charges after police said the girl lied. Fry, 50, died June 26 from complications related to a heart attack."
That poor man. The stress probably contributed to his death. The girl deserves a lot longer than 30 days for what she did to this man.
False charges happen all the time...
Only 30 days? She effectively wrecked this guy's life out of sheer spite. And to top it off, the guy DIED from complications of a heart attack. I would not be the least bit surprised to learn that this dumb broad's charges contributed to his death.
I have been down that road. I used to be Sales manager for a company in Stockton, CA. I was the only male supevisor that worked in the office. A young woman who worked in another department for about a year was fired. She went to the state and filed a claim naming me. This state agency would call me and try to ask questions as if it really happened. Finally I told the State inquisitor that she was offering money from her settelment to anyone who would back her. I quit the company about 6 months later and own my own business working out of my home. It was a nightmare not only for me but for my wife
Exactly. She tried to ruin this man's life and got 30 days at the juvie? Geesh. But, having lived in Michigan for 10 years this doesn't surprise me. In Texas or Louisiana, she'd be certified as an adult and be in a cell for about a year with Bertha Dieseldyke.
FYI
That's it? That is all the time she gets? She should have gotten a minimum of 1 year.
I can't imagine how stressful that must have been. I know that once a charge has been made, the label tends to stick no matter what the outcome. Good reason why an admonishment not to "bear false witness" is one of the ten commandments. I'm glad your past employer did not settle.
Falsely accusing someone of sexual assault is tantamount to attempted murder.
Then there would be NO punishment at all for falsely accusing homosexuals of child-rape.....
I agree totally.
That little witch. I feel bad for Fry, dying so young, probably as a result of the incident.
His family may have grounds for a wrongful death suit.
