"Apparently, the fraudulent memo scandal has taught CBS News absolutely nothing." Charles Johnson wrote yesterday at littlegreenfootballs.com. He was referring to a "CBS Evening News" story on Tuesday that suggested that the Iraq war and other military actions might force the government to resume the military draft -- a line being promoted by Sen. John Kerry's presidential campaign.
Mr. Johnson quoted another Web site, RatherBiased.com:
"In a story that was a textbook example of slipshod reporting, CBS reporter Richard Schlesinger used debunked Internet hoax e-mails and an unlabeled interest group member to scare elderly 'Evening' viewers into believing that the U.S. government is poised to resume the draft.
"At the center of Schlesinger's piece was a woman named Beverly Cocco, a Philadelphia woman who is 'sick to my stomach' that her two sons might be drafted. In his report, Schlesinger claimed that Cocco was a Republican and portrayed her as an apolitical (even Republican) mom worried about the future.
"Schlesinger did not disclose that Cocco is a chapter president of an advocacy group called People Against the Draft (PAD), which, in addition to opposing any federal proscription, seeks to establish a 'peaceful, rational foreign policy' by bringing all U.S. troops out of Iraq. Like Schlesinger's Cocco, the group portrays itself as 'nonpartisan' although its leadership seems to be entirely bereft of any Republicans.
"The group's domain is registered to a man named Jacob Levich, a left-wing activist who in a 2001 essay compared the Bush administration to the totalitarian government portrayed in George Orwell's '1984.' "
Littlegreenfootballs' Mr. Johnson added this postscript: "CBS News also reported that there are two bills in Congress to reinstate the draft, but failed to mention that they were both introduced by Democrats."

It wouldn't surprise me if Dan Rather had a prescription drug problem. The boy is addled.
I don't read the papers anymore, does this get printed in the paper?
Even as a youngster I was aware of the old saying, "When you are up to your eyeballs in crap, keep your mouth shut." CBS should heed that wisdom.
Well this story can only die if we as Freepers don't do the leg work and raise awareness of it by:
1.) Casually posting it on any and every other website we frequent.
2.) Talking about it in front of the watercooler
3.) Most important ~ circulating it to as many news outlets as possible. Look at the media outlet list in my user profile.
If Dan Rather and CBS get away with this we only have ourselves to blame.
You are talking about the paper that is delivered in the DC and surrounding areas?
The Washington Times will include this in their printed version on folks doorsteps in the next 5 hours.
All people should need to do is look at the defense budget in the personnel area. If there is not a big increase there then the draft is dead. You have to pay for all those new troops they're supposedly drafting. Well there is no big increase there so all them liberals can stop packing their bags for Canada.
Another really sad issue about all of this is there actually is current legislation pending in the House (HR163) and Senate (S89) both titled the "Universal National Service Act of 2003" that has been introduced by Mr. Rangel a DEMOCRAT. There are about 6 others noted on the bill as well who are DEMOCRATS.
So if CBS or any other house of ill-repute (DNC) want to spread the rumors and scare tactics they should get the facts straight. It is their own people initiating the legislation.
Public school teachers are helping Kerry by promoting this hoax. Now the neighbors are voting for Kerry.......because, "The teacher said the draft was coming back" AS though, the teacher is the authority on the subject!
This just makes me sick. The teachers have a free stand to say anything they want and no one is going to stop them. Look at the influence they have over their students.
We can hope that bloggers and others will out this hoax and make these folks look like the liars and fools they are!
