After months of poor-mouthing, Los Angeles County supervisors suddenly found a $309 million surplus that they decided Tuesday to spend mostly on employee pay raises and fixing up county buildings.
All told, the county has a $1.4 billion balance left over from the fiscal year that ended June 30 -- after the supervisors spent the first part of this year warning the public that they would have to close parks, libraries and probation camps because of state budget problems.
"This is a real poke in the eye for the taxpayer," said Kris Vosburgh, executive director of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. "Here we have the supervisors promoting a half-cent sales tax increase on the November ballot for law enforcement when they are sitting on a huge surplus."

Ya know, I was walking down the street yesterday, and I found $1.3 million in my pocket. Imagine that.
Tax-n-spend in LA? No suprise there...
Bull.
They were stashing it for the right time to spring finders-keepers.
Cleveland did the same thing right after then laid off 10% of the cops.
Oh, let me see...(check under sofa cushion)...oh, yeah, here's that $309 million bucks that slipped out of my pocket last July.
It makes me wonder what slush-fund the money was sitting in when someone decided it would be prudent to put it back.
County finds unexpected $309 millionDon't you hate when that happens?
Monorail!!!
Pay Raises...Excellent
If the public wanted it's money back, their would be cries of "racism". There needs to be laws to stop confiscation of this type.
Isn't that the truth! But it is surprising that they would let the word get out before the November ballot initiative to raise the sales tax.

How about giving it back you profligate b*stards?
They'll probably spend it on the cost of removing all those crosses from the county seal.
The audacity is unbelievable. I have bookmarked this one for late October to remind everyone of just that fact.
Well, as long as their going to spend it wisely! (sarcasm off)
If they looked at the Constitution for guidance they may come to the same conclusion as the Feds.
their=they're
Perhaps word was about to get out so there was no denying it...
Never happens in a Democrat administration. Here in Virginia the governor (Mark Warner - D) pushed through a tax increase due to DIRE circumstances. Guess what? Few months ago they "discovered" a surplus. They gonna give the $$ back? Ya sure, and I've got some lovely oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you!
