As part of his 100 day plan to change America, John Kerry will propose a comprehensive service plan that includes requiring mandatory service for high school students

And to think the Dems are getting after Bush with bogus allegations about a draft...

Actually that's pretty good effin' idea from John Effin' Kerry.

Also, does national service mean the military? Nope. Could the country benefit from trading the exhorbitant cost of college tuition for an ROI in government service - during a time of national crisis mind you - from young adults who have proven themselves disciplined enough to get through a four-year degree program? You bet. Will the funding of tuition be tied to performance (GPA > 3.5)? I should think so. Do I sound like Donald Rumsfeld? Heavens to Betsy, yes.

Is this a joke? We don't have the Kennedy peace Corps flavor going here, so it sounds like a draft. Almost seems like Kerry is throwing the election, not that he would win anyway.

Is this new or is it brain fart he had fighting Howard Dean last year?

Yay, mandatory service. As in, "serve or be punished". Didn't we have some sort of internal conflict over that, about 160 years ago? Perhaps between northern and southern states?

No thanks, I'd like to leave American slavery in the past.

A Kerry presidency will see America's fighting men leave the military in droves rather than serve a traitor...like Kerry

The dems will have to draft in order to have an Army...unless they use an economic draft..

An economy so bad the military will be the only place to find work...

imo

Either it is a draft (military service) or his union supporters will be real happy (not) about having their jobs taken by those doing their national service (civilian service). What will having so many young people working for their tuition do to the national economy?

Who was the Chinese dictator who forced young Chinese out into the fields? It reduced a generation to menial labor because most never finished their education. I wonder if this is where Kerry got this stupid idea?

Kerry is a sick puppy. Does he think my taxes are going to pay for some teenager to tutor six kids in reading, then get a free college education?

Kerry wants MANDATORY national service for college tuition!!!

well, that's kind of a dumb thing to say

I think your title is misleading because the quote is not written well.

The way I read it is: John Kerry will propose a comprehensive service plan that includes requiring mandatory service for high school students, and [the plan includes] four years of college tuition in exchange for two years of national service.

So the national service is not mandatory. That's how I read it but I could be wrong.

There's that pesky little 13th amendment issue, but what the hey, they don't pay attention to any other part of the Constitution.
