Just felt a quake here in the Fresno area...
Beware of rampant kooknuttery regarding quake predictions.
99% of people offering them are frauds through a variety of methods, such as making quite vague predictions repeatedly...the blown forecasts get forgotten, and when they (inevitably) get a "hit" then people publicize it to the hilt.
The other issue is that if you have 100 frauds, kooks, nuts, and psychics making quake predictions every month, if you DO have an earthquake by sheer dumb luck ONE of the assorted frauds will have successfully "predicted" it.
Hey, what happens in Vegas is supposed to STAY in Vegas!
"The cascades are all connected! Look out west coast! "
Yes, they are. What does that have to do with this moderate earthquake. Parkfield has earthquakes this size every dozen years or so.
Don't be an alarmist. The San Andreas fault has nothing to do with the Cascade Range. Look at a map.
uh...gentlemen/ladies? Check the electoral vote graph lately? California is LIGHT blue. As in "weak" kerry. All jokes aside, California is moving in a whole new direction this week......>>>>>>>>>to the right.
20% chance of eruption...according to the guy on Coast to Coast last night. But he said there were no volcanic gasses detected during the overflight yesterday.
Hehehehe! She must hate water.
The Cascade volcanoes do not share a common magma chamber and there's no particular increase in the chance one volcano in the Cascades erupts if another is erupting.
And of course the San Andreas has nothing to do with Cascades at all.
Like your money.
Just drove out to Parkfield about a month ago (Population: 37). Strange but quaint little town. At one point you cross a bridge from one side of the San Andreas Fault to the other, kind of creepy. Earthquake monitoring stations all around the area.
So ... maybe I shouldn't take that job over at Siebel--which seems to be sitting on nothing but filled in marsh land.

Yeah, those localized quakes are definitely different. I rode one out in Hollister a few years back that was small on paper (3.9 IIRC) but which was only centered a few hundred feet down. The sensation was MUCH more intense than it should have been for that magnitude, and it felt like the ground was bouncing under my feet instead of the usual sliding or rolling motions normally associated with quakes. It was very strange.

Keerect! But what's a little accurate information? Heck, we can scare everyone on the West Coast if we want to. Feh! I grow weary of people who know absolutely nothing about geology or earthquakes who come on these threads and say exceedingly stupid things.
hey, maybe it was not a quake but a zot :o)
I drove that road last year...from the 101 to Coalinga to take a co worker to Harris Ranch for lunch. It was creepy seeing all those monitoring stations.
When the Big One hits, it will completely destroy areas of Cali- which may take decades to recover from.
Well, there is a positive attitude!
